Trailing by 6, LBSU had the tyring run on in the ninth

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—In a game marked by a rain delay lasting nearly an hour, Cal State Bakersfield defeated Long Beach State 9-7 in Saturday's Big West baseball series finale at Hardt Field.

Nick Salas walked to lead off the bottom of the first. With one out, Long Beach State starter CJ Hood hit Brock Perreira on a 1-2 pitch. Kobe Silva doubled to left to score Salas as Perreira made it to third. Kyler Stancato grounded out to first before Hood hit Cody Hendriks to load the bases. Hood fell behind in the count 2-1 to Cooper Gerecke before the CSUB catcher grounded out to third to end the inning.

Adrian Lopez opened the second with a single, but he was thrown out a second on a Jack Hammond 5-4 fielder's choice. Kellen O'Connor walked Alex Champagne. With two outs, Armando Briseno singled through the right side. Hammond attempted to score on the play but was thrown out by right fielder Jared Bujanda-McConnell at the plate. With replay available, Long Beach State appealed, and upon review, the call was overturned, tying the game at one.

Bujanda-McConnell walked to begin the bottom of the second. Elijah Pelayo's single advanced Bujanda-McConnell to third. Salas hit a shot to Briseno at third. He came home with the throw, which Bujanda-McConnell beat to give the 'Runners a 2-1 lead. Pelayo was thrown out at third on the front end of a double steal attempt. McConnell took second and scored on a Zavien Watson single.

Cristien Banda relieved Hood to face Perreira in a lefty-lefty matchup. Perreira hit a comebacker to Banda on the hill. His throw was low and couldn't be fielded by Lopez at short, allowing both runners to reach safely. Silva flew out to right. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. Stancato singled through the right side to score Watson. Kyle Ashworth, the Long Beach State right fielder, appeared to have thrown out Perreira at the plate for the third out. The Roadrunners appealed with the call being upheld, keeping it a 4-1.

Hammond's two-out single in the top of the third scored Connor Charpiot to cut the CSUB lead in half. Champagne followed with a single through the right side that drove in John Newman Jr. Hammond was thrown out at third by Bujanda McConnell to end the inning with the score 4-3.

The Roadrunners scored five runs in the bottom of the third without the benefit of a hit. CSUB scored twice on walks, twice on an error, and once on a hit-by pitch.

Due to the rain, play was suspended with one out in the bottom of the fourth. The delay began at 2:59 p.m. PDT and lasted 56 minutes. During the delay, Jacob Gutierrez came onto pitch in favor of O'Connor.

Hammond and Champagne hit back-to-back singles to start the top of the sixth. With one out, a Briseno grounder advanced the runners to second and third. Ashworth singled to left to drive in both runs and dent the Roadrunners' lead.

Champagne homered to right with one out to make it 9-6.

Nick Marinconz singled to lead off the top of the ninth. Charpiot singled to right center, advancing Marinconz to third. David Villegas relieved Gutierrez. His first batter was Newman Jr., who he struck out looking. Lopez's sacrifice fly scored Marinconz. Hammond reached on an infield single as pinch runner Landon Greenhouse advanced to third. Champagne grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice to end the game.

The Dirtbags outhit the Roadrunners 13-8. Champagne went 3-for-4 with his home run, two runs scored, and two RBI. Hammond was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Charpiot was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Cal State Bakersfield (7-20, 3-6 Big West) was led by Pelayo, who was 2-for-4.

On Tuesday, Long Beach State (14-10-1, 4-5 Big West) travels to Pepperdine (8-19). Coverage on ESPN+ begins at 3 p.m.
