Adrian Lopez and Jack Hammond homer for the Dirtbags
The Dirtbags took the lead in the top of the first on a two-out John Newman Jr. RBI double that scored Kyle Ashworth.
Adrian Lopez led off the top of the third with his sixth home run of the year. Jack Hammond increased the lead to 4-0 when he hit a two-run blast to left center with two outs.
The Waves got on the board in the third on Connor Bradshaw's sac fly, which plated a run. Long Beach State scored in the top of the fourth on an Ashworth sac fly, which was misplayed, as Alex Champagne crossed home plate on the play.
Connor Vine homered with one out in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-2.
Ashworth opened the top of the seventh with an opposite-field single to left. Ashworth stole second on the third pitch of Lopez's at-bat. Ashworth stole third on the fourth pitch of the at-bat as the count went to 2-2. Lopez doubled to right center to drive in Ashworth for the sixth LBSU run.
Van Larson and Owen Geiss combined on a four-hitter through six innings. Nick Williams came on to start the seventh. Connor Walsh reached on an infield single. Jacob Rebrook walked to bring up Cole Sheehan, who successfully sacrificed both runners up a base. Vine fouled out to first on his Williams pitch. Brady Renck flew out to center to end the inning.
Bradshaw reached on an error as the bottom of the eight began. Julian Nunez fouled out to first, but the ball was deep enough to advance Bradshaw. Charles Masino grounded to third, but Bradshaw remained a third. Jonathan Largaespada, the fourth Long Beach State pitcher of the game, hit Corwin Hemmingsen. Luke Pemberton grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice for the final out.
Long Beach State closer Mike Villani relieved Largaespada to begin the ninth. Rebrook battled back from 0-2 in the count to work out a walk. Rebrook advanced to third on a Villani wild pitch. Sheehan reached on an error as Rebrook scored. Villani struck out Vine on three pitches. Renck popped out to third for the second out. Sheehan was credited with a stolen base as a Villani breaking ball went into the dirt. Bradshaw ran the count to 2-2 before Villani fired a fastball by him for the third strike and the end of the game.
Newman Jr. went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Lopez was 2-for-5 with his home run, two RBI, and a run scored. Long Beach State's five pitchers combined on a six-hitter and nine strikeouts. Geiss was awarded the win as he struck out five and allowed two hits in three innings. Renck and Walsh combined for four of the six Pepperdine hits (9-20).
Long Beach State (15-10-1, 4-5 Big West) welcomes UC San Diego (18-6, 5-3 Big West) to Bohl Diamond at Blair Field for a three-game series this weekend. The action begins Friday with ESPN+ coverage starting at 6 p.m.
