Hammond Goes 2-for-4 For Long Beach State
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Cal State Bakersfield's Kobe Silva doubled with one out in the bottom of the 10th to drive in the winning run and send the Roadrunners past Long Beach State 2-1 in Big West baseball action Friday night at Hardt Field.
Cody Hendriks singled with one out in the bottom of the second. Kellan Montgomery, LBSU's starter, was ahead in the count 1-2 before hitting Cooper Gerecke to give Cal State Bakersfield runners on first and second. Nick Salas walked to load the bases. Montgomery struck out Elijah Pelayo looking for the second out. Montgomery struck out Jonah Shields, CSUB's leading hitter, on five pitches to get out of the inning.
Armando Brisceno reached on a two-out opposite-field single to right in the top of the third. Gary Grosjean, CSUB's starter, hit Kyle Ashworth on a 1-1 count to bring up Adrian Lopez. Grosjean struck out Lopez to end the inning.
The Dirtbags took the lead when Connor Charpiot homered to lead off the top of the fourth.
Pelayo led off the fifth with an opposite-field double to right center. Shields tried to bunt Pelayo over, but he popped up to John Newman Jr., Long Beach State's catcher. Zavien Watson popped up to Lopez at shortstop. Montgomery struck out the Roadrunners' third batter, Jacob Gutierrez, to end the frame.
Kyler Stancato walked with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Hendriks popped out to Ashworth in short right field. Stancato advanced to third when Montgomery's throw went to right field on a failed pickoff attempt. Gerecke ran the count to 3-2 before Montgomery tied his season-high with his seventh strikeout.
Jonathan Largaespada relieved Montgomery in the seventh, and he struck out the side. Nick Williams entered to open the eighth. Williams walked Watson on five pitches. Williams hit Gutierrez, who was attempting to bunt the runner over. Kobe Silva's sacrifice bunt attempt was unsuccessful. He swung on the third pitch and grounded into a 1-6-3 double play as Williams took third. Stancato tied the game with an opposite-field single through the left side. Hendricks flew out to right for the third out.
Nathen Morris took over for Williams in the ninth. Salas walked with one out. Pelayo's grounder to third was fielded by Briseno, who threw to second to get the lead runner. Shields flew out to right to send the game to extra innings.
Nick Marinconz doubled off the left field wall with two outs in the top of the 10th. CSUB reliever Nick Perryman bounced back by striking out Briseno to keep the Dirtbags at bay.
Gutierrez reached on an infield single with one out in the bottom of the 10th. Jared Bujanda McConnell ran for CSUB, and he scored the winning run on Silva's double.
Both teams recorded six hits, with Jack Hammond posting two for the Dirtbags. Silva was 2-for-5 to lead the 'Runners. The four Long Beach State pitches would combine for 10 strikeouts. The two Cal State Bakersfield pitchers amassed eight K's.
Long Beach State (14-9-1, 4-4 Big West) and Cal State Bakersfield (6-20, 2-6 Big West) conclude the series Saturday. Coverage on ESPN+ begins at 1 p.m.
