Softball Wins Two Extra Inning Contests Via Walkoff Against UC Davis

Spectacular pitching helped Long Beach State to a pair of wins across 19 innings Saturday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – After allowing one run in the top of the first inning of game one to UC Davis, Long Beach State pitching would allow no further runs over 18 more innings, getting key hits late as the Beach won two extra-inning affairs over UC Davis on Saturday at the LBSU Softball Complex.
UC Davis (10-14, 1-4 Big West) started off the day getting a two-out single from Leah Polson, and then a fly ball to right field landed just in front of a diving Corissa Sweet, rolling to the wall for a triple and allowing the Aggies to get on the board early in the opener, 1-0.
That would be the last run the Aggies would score on the day, however, owing to a pair of great outings from Sophia Fernandez and Kate Barnett.
Fernandez tied her career-high with seven strikeouts in an 11-inning complete game in the first game, scattering eight hits and allowing just the one run in a masterful performance.
Long Beach State (9-22, 4-1 Big West) finally evened the score in the sixth inning, as Carly Robbins doubled to center field and then scored on a double from Sinclair Lawhorn. The Beach continued to threaten but weren't able to end the game until the 11th. Lawhorn started the inning with a walk, and after two more walks loaded the bases, a two-out single from Selena Perez ended the game in a 2-1 victory for the Beach.
In the second game, 25-30 mile per hour winds complicated matters in what ultimately proved to be a great pitcher's duel. Eryka Gonzales got two quick outs to start the game, but a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases before a crucial strikeout kept the Aggies off of the board in the first.
In a similar inning in the bottom half, Kennedi Brown loaded the bases with walks to Jacquelyn Bickar and Sinclair Lawhorn along with a single from Makayla Medellin, but grabbed back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat for Long Beach State.
The Beach turned to freshman Kate Barnett for the second inning on, and the freshman allowed just two hits over 7.0 innings of work, striking out two, going pitch-for-pitch with the all-conference pitcher Brown as the zeros stacked up.
Perez, after the walkoff in a two-hit game in the first, gave the Beach some momentum in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out double, but the big hit didn't come at that point to send the second game to extra innings as well, tied at 0-0.
Barnett set the Aggies quickly down in order in the eighth, and after Lawhorn drew a walk, Vidal cracked a hard liner to left field that clipped off the glove of Sarah Nakahara, glancing off all the way to the wall and the senior charged around to score from first to end the nightcap 1-0.
