Softball Completes Sweep Of UC Davis Behind Another Fernandez Gem

Sophia Fernandez threw her second complete game of the series on the way to the win.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State senior pitcher Sophia Fernandez threw her second complete game in as many days, allowing one unearned run on five hits as the Beach finished off a sweep of UC Davis with a 4-1 victory on Sunday.
Fresh off of an 11.0 inning complete game victory from the senior on Saturday, Long Beach State (10-22, 5-1 Big West) turned to Sophia Fernandez once again who had another fantastic day in the circle. Fernandez went the distance for Long Beach State, allowing five hist and just one unearned run on the day as the Beach completed the sweep of UC Davis (10-15, 1-5 Big West) with a 4-1 win.
Runs were again at a premium on Sunday, as neither team scored through the first three innings. The Beach finally broke through in the fourth inning. Makayla Medellin doubled to left field to get the inning started, and after moving to third on a ground ball, the Beach executed some perfect small ball with a suicide squeeze. Medellin was able to slide home in front of the tag to give the Beach a 1-0 lead on the perfectly executed bunt from Carly Robbins. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases, and Robbins came home to score on an RBI groundout as the Beach took a 2-0 lead.
UC Davis pulled one back with a two-out rally in the top of the fifth. After a single from Anna Dethlefson put the Aggies leadoff batter on base, the league's stolen base leader swiped second and advanced to third as the ball kicked away, where she was able to score on a shallow single from Leah Polson in the next at-bat.
The Beach got out of the inning with a groundout, and added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. Medellin reached for the second time with a walk, and Robbins came through with another RBI cracking a double to the gap to score the sophomore and make the score 3-1.
The Beach would add one more in the sixth, as Rebekah Durazo singled to start a rally, and Selena Perez hit an RBI double to give the Beach extra insurance. There was still drama to be had as an error helped the Aggies load the bases with two outs in the seventh, but a routine fly ball ended the threat and the Beach closed out the 4-1 victory.
Long Beach State continues Big West conference action next weekend with an unconventional series. The team will play a double-header with CSUN starting at 4 p.m. on Friday, prior to a nationally televised contest Saturday night at 7 p.m. on ESPNU against the Matadors.
