Long Beach State rallied to win the opener in the bottom of the seventh before dropping the second game.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Down 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Long Beach State's Makayla Medellin delivered a thrilling walkoff as the Beach won the opening game against CSUN 4-3 before losing the second to earn a split in the first two games of a unique series with the Matadors.
After Long Beach State (11-23, 6-2 Big West) put two on in the first inning of the first game, both LBSU starter Sophia Fernandez and CSUN (17-14, 1-7 Big West) starter Lauryn Carranco settled in for a string of zeroes through the first four innings of the contest.
Long Beach State grabbed the lead in the fifth inning, as Corissa Sweet worked a leadoff walk to start a rally. With the bases loaded, Makayla Medellin hit a grounder with eyes that scored one, and then Carranco when trying to make a play spiked the ball into the ground allowing a second run to score, giving the Beach a 2-0 lead.
CSUN answered back in the top of the sixth inning, however, as Kaylee Escutia doubled to start the inning, and then RBI hits from Lulu Sanchez and Maddie Padilla tied the game at 2-2.
A leadoff single from Shaylan Whatman brought home a run as the Matadors pushed around their third baseman with a sacrifice and an RBI groundout to put CSUN in front 3-2.
Selena Perez singled to get a rally going for the Beach in the bottom of the seventh. With a runner on, Medellin smacked her third hit of the day past Raegan Jackson to the wall, and with aggressive baserunning went for home and was called safe with an obstruction call, giving the Beach a thrilling 4-3 walkoff win to start the day. Medellin would finish the opener 3-for-3 with all three RBI for the Beach, an RBI and a walk in a massive game.
In the second game, it was Whatman that carried the day for the Matadors on the way to the win with 5 RBI. The CSUN third baseman hit a three-run home run to give the Matadors and early lead, and then had another RBI single in the fourth before a solo home tun to plate CSUN's seventh run in the sixth inning.
Long Beach State took advantage of three CSUN errors to score three runs of their own. The Beach threatened by loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Isabella Alonso was able to finish off the complete game in a 7-3 win for CSUN.
With heavy rains anticipated over the weekend, Long Beach State and CSUN have agreed to finish their series on campus at the LBSU Softball Complex this coming Tuesday at 1 p.m. All tickets sold to Saturday's rescheduled game will be honored on Tuesday. LBSU's originally scheduled game with UCLA on April 2 has been delayed to April 23.
