Ashworth & Newman Jr. Each Post 3 Hits; Dirtbags Defeat The Titans 5-2

Long Beach State Played In Front Of 2,922; The 14th Largest Crowd In School History
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Kyle Ashworth and John Newman Jr. posted three hits as Long Beach State defeated Cal State Fullerton 5-2 in Big West baseball action Friday night at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Newman Jr.'s one-out double in the bottom of the second scored Ashworth and Connor Charpiot to give the Dirtbags a 2-0 advantage.
Long Beach State added two more in the fourth as Charpiot drove in Ashworth with a double and came around to score on a Newman Jr. single.
Newman Jr. hit his fourth home run of the year, solo shot with one out in the bottom of the sixth.
Myles Patton shut out the Titans over the first seven innings, limiting Cal State Fullerton to five hits. Patton struck out seven and did not walk a batter. He threw 99 pitches, 71 for strikes.
Grant Cherry relieved Patton to start the eighth. Cherry walked Eli Lopez with one out before striking out Maddox Latta. Marcos Rosales ran the count to 3-2 before breaking up the shutout with a single to right to score Lopez, who was running on the play. Moises Guzman doubled in Rosales to make it 5-2.
Long Beach State went to the bullpen, bringing in lefty Nick Williams to face a lefthanded hitting Colby Wallace. The Titans went to the bench, pinch-hitting a righthanded hitter, Nico Regino, for Wallace. Williams hit Regino with his first pitch. Williams got ahead in the count 1-2 on Matthew Bardowell before striking him out with a breaking ball to end the inning.
Dirtbags' closer Mike Villani came on in the ninth as Draven Nushida reached on an error to begin the inning. Max Ortega's grounder to third advanced Nushida to second. Luke Mistone flew out to right before Lopez walked to bring up Latta as the tying run. Villani got ahead 0-2 with a pair of fastballs before striking out Latta (who struck out for the fourth time) with a slider to end the game.
Ashworth, a junior, recorded three hits in a game for the seventh time in his career to lead the Dirtbags. He was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Newman Jr. was a triple short of the cycle as he was 3-for-4 with his home run and four RBI. Charpiot was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
With two hits each, Rosales and Guzman combined for four of the seven Cal State Fullerton hits.
The teams played in front of a crowd of 2,922, the largest for the Dirtbags since Feb. 25, 2002, when 3,013 saw Long Beach State face Sacramento State. Friday's attendance is the 14th highest in school history.
Long Beach State (11-8-1, 1-3 Big West) and Cal State Fullerton (8-12, 1-3 Big West) continue the series Saturday night. Coverage on ESPN+ begins at 1 p.m.
