LBSU Clinches The Series By Scoring All Of Their Runs In Their Final Two At-Bats

LONG BEACH, Calif.—Long Beach State rallied with four runs over their final two at-bats as the Dirtbags defeated Cal State Fullerton 4-3 Saturday night at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.

Moises Guzman broke the seal when he led off the top of the fourth with his third home run of the season, giving the Titans a 1-0 advantage.

Cal State Fullerton starter Christian Rodriguez retired the first 11 Dirtbags he faced before Connor Charpiot singled with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. John Newman Jr. followed with an infield single to second. Charpiot advanced to third on the play when Draven Nushida's throw went wide of the bag at first. Rodriguez got out of the inning when he struck out Jack Hammond.

Marcos Rosales singled through the right side with one out in the top of the sixth. Guzman executed a perfect hit-and-run, as his single moved Rosales to third. Nushida's ground out to second scored Rosales, and Guzman took second. Matthew Bardowell reached on an infield single to give the Titans runners on the corners. Colby Wallace grounded out to second to end the inning.

Adrian Lopez singled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. He stole second before Rodriguez struck out Charpiot to get out of the frame.

Luke Mistone singled to begin the seventh. He advanced to second on a Jared Snyder sac bunt. Eli Lopez reached on an error, which allowed Mistone to reach third as he made it to second. Adrian Lopez fielded Maddox Latta's grounder at short. His throw home was wide, allowing Mistone to score. Runners remained on the corners for Rosales. Latta stole second to keep the Titans out of the double play. Jonathan Largaespada, who relieved Kellan Montgomery at the start of the inning, struck out Rosales. Guzman flew out to the warning track in left center to conclude the inning.

Newman Jr. opened the bottom of the seventh with a single to left. Hammond lined out to left. Cole Santander doubled to right center, allowing Newman Jr. to reach third. Alex Champagne reached on an infield single to second, scoring Newman Jr. Nushida's throwing error. This resulted in the ball being declared out of play, allowing Santander to score to make it 3-2.

The Titans went to the bullpen, bringing in Seth Tomczak. Nick Marinconz tied the game when he singled off Tomczak, plating Champagne. The Titans turned a 6-3 double play on a Ty Borgogno pop-up on which Marinconz was off with the pitch.

Kyle Ashworth singled to begin the bottom of the eighth but was thrown out at second on Adrian Lopez's sac bunt attempt. Adrian Lopez stole second on a 1-0 count against Charpiot. A passed ball allowed the Dirtbags to put the go-ahead run at third. The Titans brought the infield in as Charpiot hit a fly ball to short left field. Adrian Lopez tagged up and beat the throw home to give LBSU the lead.

Dirtbags closer Mike Villani entered for the second consecutive night in a save situation as the top of the ninth got underway. His first batter was pinch-hitter Elijah Ramos. Down 1-2 in the count, Ramos reached on an infield single. Snyder's sac bunt advanced Ramos to second. Eli Lopez popped up to second, but Ramos couldn't move up a base. Latta grounded out to short to end the game.

Newman Jr. went 2-for-4 with a run scored to pace the Dirtbags. Cristien Banda, the third LBSU pitcher of the game earned the victory as he struck out two in a scoreless eighth-inning appearance. Villani tallied his fifth save of the season. Guzman was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI to lead Cal State Fullerton.

Long Beach State (12-8-1, 2-3 Big West) and Cal State Fullerton (8-13, 1-4 Big West) conclude the series Sunday afternoon. Coverage on ESPN+ begins at 1 p.m.
