Eryka Gonzales Throws A Complete Game Four-Hitter
LONG BEACH, Calif.--Long Beach State defeated California Baptist 4-3 in softball action Wednesday night at the Long Beach State Softball Complex.
The Beach scored with a two-out rally in the bottom of the first. Makayla Medellin singled down the left field line. CBU starter Morgan McConnell hit Sinclair Lawhorn to put runners on first and second. Rebekah Durazo doubled down the left field line to drive in both runners.
Long Beach State added two in the bottom of the third. McConnell hit Carly Robbins to begin the inning. Medellin walked on four consecutive pitches before Lawhorn singled up the middle to score Robbins. Alyssa Argomaniz relieved McConnell and walked Durazo to load the bases. Sara Olson's sac fly plated Medellin for a 4-0 score.
The Lancers broke the seal in the top of the fourth when Kayla Lyon homered off Eryka Gonzales.
Lyon led off the top of the seventh by homering again. Ashlee Annett followed with a double to left center. Kate Penberthy's grounder to second, advanced pinch runner Cayla Crawford to third. Pinch hitter Mya Avila's sac fly scored Crawford to make it 4-3. Matti Severns bunted to try to reach base. Her attempt was fielded by Robbins, who charged in from third. She threw it to Jacquelyn Bickar, LBSU's second baseman, covering first base for the final out.
Gonzales tossed a complete game four-hitter. She struck out three and walked two. She threw 82 pitches, 56 for strikes. Three Lancers' (14-16) pitchers limited LBSU to three hits, but Long Beach State worked out five walks.
Long Beach State (7-22, 2-1 Big West) opens a three-game series against UC Davis (10-12, 1-2 Big West) Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
