For the third day in a row, UCSB rallies past the Dirtbags
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—For the third consecutive day, No. 25 UC Santa Barbara came from behind to defeat Long Beach State as the Gauchos handed the Dirtbags a 7-4 loss Sunday afternoon in the Big West baseball series finale at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
A pair of errors by UCSB starting pitcher Ryan Gallagher on back-to-back sacrifice bunt attempts by Jack Hammond and Alex Champagne resulted in the Dirtbags scoring a run in the top of the second.
Adrian Lopez led off the third with a walk. He stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Gauchos' catcher Brendan Durfee. Connor Charpiot's opposite-field single to the right scored Lopez. John Newman Jr. walked before Gallagher induced Hammond into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
The Gauchos got on the board with two outs in the fourth. Aaron Parker worked out a walk-off CJ Hood before Justin Trimble recorded the first hit of the game for UCSB, a single to right. Hood was called for a balk, which scored Parker. Champagne chased down an Ivan Brethowr fly ball at the warning track in left-center for the final out.
Hood walked Reiss Calvin to begin the bottom of the sixth. Zander Darby's opposite-field single sent Calvin to third as Darby took second on an LBSU error. Durfee's grounder to second tied the game as Calvin crossed home. Parker singled through the drawn-in Long Beach State infield to give the Gauchos the lead. Nick Williams relieved Hood in a lefty-lefty matchup against Trimble. Trimble hit a comebacker to Williams, who tried to throw out the lead runner at second. His throw went wide, allowing both runners to reach safely.
Brethowr's opposite-field single to the right loaded the bases. Williams struck out Jessada Brown, looking. Nick Oakley walked to score the third run of the inning. Grant Cherry replaced Williams to face Jonathan Mendez in a right-right faceoff. Mendez singled up the middle to drive in two runs. Calvin struck out to end the inning.
Gallagher and Cole Tryba combined to retire 11 in a row at one point for the Gauchos (12-5, 3-0 Big West) before Nick Marinconz singled with one out in the top of the seventh.
Lopez's leadoff home run in the top of the eighth was his fourth of the year, cutting the UCSB advantage to 6-3. Oakley's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the eighth put the Gauchos back up by four.
Pinch-hitter Jonny Rodriguez and Kyle Ashworth posted consecutive singles with two outs in the top of the ninth. Lopez made it three in a row as he singled to center to plate Rodriguez. Charpiot, the tying run, flew out to second to end the game.
Lopez was 2-for-4 with his home run, two RBI, and two runs scored. Ashworth went 2-for-5 as the Dirtbags posted nine hits. The three Long Beach State pitchers combined on a six-hitter and struck out 10.
