All Six Gauchos' Runs Come off Three Home Runs
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—Three home runs powered No. 25 UC Santa Barbara as the Gauchos defeated Long Beach State 6-2 in Big West baseball action Saturday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
Brendan Durfee singled through the right side with one out in the bottom of the first. Aaron Parker's single advanced Durfee to third. LBSU starter Kellan Montgomery struck out Jessada Brown looking for the second out. Justin Trimble grounded out to first on the first Montgomery pitch he faced to conclude the frame.
Alex Champagne singled through the right side to lead off the top of the third. Ty Borgogno successfully sacrificed Champagne to second. With the count 1-1 on Jack Hammond, Champagne stole third. Hammond's grounder to short was deep enough to drive in Champagne for a 1-0 Long Beach State lead.
Taking advantage of the Dirtbags' shifts, Durfee and Parker posted back-to-back opposite-field singles with one out in the bottom of the third. Brown hit a grounder in the hole, which Borgogno dived for from his third base position. He got up and threw Brown out for the second out. Trimble homered to right to make it 3-1 in favor of the Gauchos. Montgomery struck out Ivan Brethowr to end the inning.
John Newman Jr. doubled to right center with one out in the top of the fourth. Mike Gutierrez struck out Nick Mariconz as Newman Jr. stole third. Cole Santander's infield single plated Newman Jr. for the second Long Beach State run.
Connor Charpiot singled with one out in the top of the sixth. Gutierrez walked Newman Jr. before being relieved by Jackson Flora. Flora, a righthander, got the righthanded hitting Nick Marinconz to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
Trimble reached on an error to open the bottom of the sixth. Brethowr homered to left center to increase the UCSB advantage to 5-2.
Kyle Ashworth singled to right with one out in the top of the eighth. Newman Jr. walked, which brought Marinconz up as the tying run. Flora got Marinconz to pop up to first for the final out.
Nick Oakley's two-out home run to right in the bottom of the eighth capped off the scoring.
The UC Santa Barbara pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts while only allowing five hits. Montgomery took the loss, striking out seven with no walks in seven innings. Durfee had three hits to pace the Gauchos.
