Ashworth and Charpiot Each Post Two Hits For Long Beach State
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— No. 25 UC Santa Barbara defeated Long Beach State 10-5 in Big West baseball opener for both teams Friday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
Kyle Ashworth led off the game with a single to right center. Ashworth advanced to third when Matt Ager's pickoff attempt went wide of first and ended up in short rightfield. Jack Hammond's sac fly scored Ashworth to give the Dirtbags the lead.
Aaron Parker singled with two outs in the bottom of the first. Justin Trimble walked. Myles Patton hit Jessada Brown to load the bases. Isaac Brethowr worked the count to 3-2 against Patton before walking to tie the game at one. Nick Oakley flew out to left for the final out.
Ashworth walked with one out in the top of the third and stole second later in the inning. He came around on a two-out Connor Charpiot opposite-field single to right to return the Dirtbags to the lead.
Cole Santander worked out a walk against Ager to lead off the fourth. Adrian Lopez singled through the left side to push Santander up a base. Ager struck out Nick Marinconz before walking Alex Champagne to load the bases. Ager struck out Ty Borgogno for the second out. Ashworth's opposite-field double to the left scored Santander and Lopez for a 4-1 advantage.
Charpiot led off the fifth by hitting his first home run. John Newman Jr. walked before heading to second on a Santander single. Lopez flew out to center before Ager recorded two strikeouts to end the inning.
LeTrey McCollum opened the bottom of the fifth with an opposite-field single to right. Patton hit Reiss Calvin on a 1-2 pitch to bring up Brendan Durfee. Durfee cut the lead to one with a three-run home run to right on a 0-2 pitch. Parker reached on an error. Patton battled back, getting Trimble to ground into a 4-6-3 double play. Brown grounded out to third to end the frame.
Brethowr walked to begin the sixth. Oakley successfully sacrificed Brethowr to second with a bunt. Jonathan Mendez doubled in Brethowr to tie the game at five. Nick Williams relieved Patton as McCollum came to bat. McCollum reached on a fielder's choice when Williams tried to take his grounder and throw out Mendez at second. Calvin walked to load the bases. Durfee singled to right to drive in two runs. Parker reached on a fielder's choice when Borgogno tried to tag out Calvin at third on a grounder. The call was confirmed after a Long Beach State challenged the call. With the bases loaded, Trimble grounded into a 1-2 fielder's choice for the second out. Williams struck out Brown to end the inning.
Brown's two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the eighth highlighted a three-run UCSB rally.
Ashworth was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI for the Dirtbags. Charpiot went 2-for-4 with his home run and two RBI. The four LBSU pitchers combined for eight strikeouts and six walks.
Durfee had two hits and five RBI for the Gauchos. Parker posted two hits and two runs. Ager and Bremner combined to strike out 14 while walking five.
Long Beach State (10-5-1) and UC Santa Barbara (10-5) continue the series Saturday. The first pitch on ESPN+ is set for 3:05 p.m.
