Two Big Green Pitchers Combine On A Four-Hitter
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Dartmouth's Marco Dumsnky and Jack Metzger combined on a four-hitter as the Big Green defeated Long Beach State 3-0 Wednesday night at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Tyler Robinson led off the game with a single through the right side and advanced to second on a Dirtbags passed ball. Elliot Krewson's grounder to short advanced Robinson to third. Kolton Freeman walked. Nathan Cmeyla's sac fly plated Robinson to give the Big Green the lead. Freeman stole second on a 2-2 Josh Donegan count to Ethan Brown. Brown grounded out to third to end the inning.
Dumsky retired the first 11 Dirtbags he faced before giving up a two-out Connor Charpiot single in the bottom of the fourth. He quickly retired LBSU to get out of the frame.
Adrian Lopez worked out a one-out walk in the bottom of the fifth. Lopez stole second on a 0-1 pitch to Justin Roulston. Dumsky struck out Roulston before getting Alex Champagne to fly out to center for the third out.
Freeman singled with one out in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Brown singled to center. Freeman advanced to third as Champagne bobbled the ball. He recovered and threw the ball to his relay, Nick Marinconz, at second. Marinconz turned and threw to Jack Collins, who tagged Freeman out for out number three.
Cole Santander singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh. The Big Green went to the bullpen, bringing in Jack Metzger. Left fielder Jackson Hower made a diving catch on a Jonny Rodriguez liner down the left field line for the second out. Santander attempted to take second on a Metzger pitch in the dirt, but Cmeyla, the Dartmouth catcher, threw him out.
Robinson reached on a one-out Long Beach State error in the top of the eighth. He moved to second on a wild pitch by Grant Cherry (who relieved Banda). He headed to third on a Krewson grounder to second. Robinson scored on a second wild pitch. Freeman followed with a home run to left to make it 3-0.
Champagne bunted for a single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. He advanced to second on a Metzgar wild pitch. Pinch-hitter John Newman Jr. ran the count to 3-2 before being called out on a check swing strike three.
Metzgar retired the Dirtbags in the ninth to clinch the win. Dumsky struck out eight and walked one in 6.1 innings for the Big Green (1-5). He threw 69 pitches, 48 for strikes. Metzgar picked up the save, going the final 2.2 for Dartmouth. Metzgar struck out three and did not walk a batter. He threw 30 pitches, 21 for strikes.
All three runs that the Dirtbags gave up were unearned. The four Long Beach State pitchers scattered seven hits. Donegan was the tough luck loser, allowing four hits in six innings. He struck out three and walked one batter. Charpiot posted two of the four Long Beach State hits.
Long Beach State (10-4-1) opens Big West play Friday afternoon at UC Santa Barbara (9-5). ESPN+ coverage begins at 4:05 p.m.
