The Shockers Take Advantage of Long Beach State Mistakes To Take The Series
WICHITA, Kan.—Wichita State took advantage of the Long Beach State mistakes Sunday afternoon as the Shockers defeated Long Beach State 8-2 in the series finale at Eck Stadium.
Dayvin Johnson's opposite field double to left began the Shockers' second. Johnson attempted to take third on a CJ Hood pitch in the dirt and was thrown out by the Dirtbags' catcher; John Newman Jr. Hood quickly retired the next two Shockers to close the inning.
Sophomore Alex Champagne led off the top of the third with his first career home run to get Long Beach State on the scoreboard.
With one out in the bottom of the third, Seth Stroh reached on an error, which allowed him to reach second. Hood hit Alex Birge to bring up the Shockers' leadoff hitter, Camden Johnson. A passed ball allowed both runners to move up a base. Johnson grounded out to third, but Stroh scored to tie the game. Ryan Callahan flew out to left for the final out of the inning.
Newman Jr. put the Dirtbags back into the lead at 2-1 when he led off the top of the fourth with his third home run of the season.
Hood issued back-to-back walks to Dayvin Johnson and Jaden Gustafson with one out in the fourth. A wild pitch advanced the runners up a base before Kam Durnin walked to load the bases. Josh Livingston tied the game with a sac fly to left. Stroh flew out to right to keep the score tied.
Wichita State starter Tommy LaPour hit Ty Borgogno to begin the top of the fifth. Champagne successfully sacrificed Borgogno to second with a bunt. Nick Marinconz grounded out to third, but Borgogno could not advance on the play. The Shockers went to the bullpen, calling on lefty Tyler Dobbs to face the lefthanded-hitting Kyle Ashworth. Wichita State won the battle as Ashworth grounded out to short.
Alexander Mihalakis relieved Hood to begin the fifth and walked Birge to start the inning. Mihalakis hit Camden Johnson before Callahan put down a successful sac bunt to push the runners up a base. Derek Williams singled up the middle to score Birge and give the Shockers the lead. With a lefty in Dayvin Johnson coming to the plate, Long Beach State saw lefty Nick Williams enter the game. Johnson grounded into a 3-6 fielder's choice as Camden Johnson scored. Gustafson walked. Durnin. Nick Wallerstedt replaced Williams as LBSU went right-on-right to face Durnin. Wallerstedt's first pitch was wild, allowing both runners to advance.
Wichita State scored one in the bottom of the sixth after the Dirtbags committed an error and saw Cristien Banda throw two wild pitches in relief. Nate Adler, the third Shockers' (9-5) pitcher of the day, got the first out of the seventh before walking Adrian Lopez. He got the second out before walking Champagne. Marinconz flew out to right center for the third out. The Shockers capped off the scoring in the eighth when Camden Johnson drove two runs with a single up the middle with the bases loaded.
The six Long Beach State pitchers allowed only four hits and struck out nine. However, LBSU walked five and had four wild pitches. The Dirtbags defense committed two errors and recorded two passed balls. Newman Jr. posted two of the four Long Beach State hits.
Long Beach State (10-3-1) hosts Dartmouth (0-5) Wednesday night. Coverage on ESPN+ begins at 6 p.m.
