
Long Beach State Wins A Pivotal Road Contest At Cal State Fullerton, 74-59

Five Beach players scored in double-figures to lead the Beach to victory
FULLERTON, Calif. – Five Long Beach State players scored in double-figures to lead the Beach to a crucial road victory at Cal State Fullerton, 74-59, on Thursday night at Titan Gym.
The Beach (12-15, 7-10 Big West) took down the Titans (9-18, 5-12 Big West) as the two squads, along with Cal State Bakersfield vie for the final two seed in The Big West Championship. With the win, Long Beach State puts two games between itself and Cal State Fullerton, with three games remaining for both teams. LBSU meanwhile leads Cal State Bakersfield by 2.5 games, while the Roadrunners have two games left in the regular season.
The Beach shot 40.0% (26-65) from the field as they were led by Casey Valenti-Paea's 16-point performance. Valenti-Paea led the team as Savannah Tucker (15 points), Sydney Woodley (13 points), Cheyenne Givens (13 points), and Patricia Chung (10 points) rounded out the offensive barrage for LBSU.
Cal State Fullerton got off to an early 8-3 lead after tallying three-straight jumpers. However, the Beach was quick to counter as Tucker drained back-to-back threes to give LBSU a 9-8 lead at 5:22. The Long Beach lead was short-lived as the Titans went on a 12-2 run as they opened up a 10-point lead (23-13) with just 30 seconds left in the first quarter, before taking a 23-15 advantage into the second.
Long Beach State would bounce back as the Beach kicked off the second quarter on an incredible 15-0 run. The span of 15-straight points was highlighted by back-to-back triples from Chung as the Beach went up 30-23 with 6:28 on the clock. The Titans broke the scoring drought at 5:50 with an 8-0 run as the hosts regained the lead, 31-30, by 1:59. The Beach used an 8-0 run of their own all courtesy of Givens as Long Beach State jumped back on top, 38-31, before leading 38-33 at halftime.
Woodley opened the second half with a three, but Cal State Fullerton struck back with seven-straight points to cut Long Beach State's lead down to one (41-40) at 6:15. That was as close as the Titans would get, as LBSU closed the frame on a 6-0 run taking a 51-43 lead into the fourth quarter.
Fullerton made it a two-possession game (51-45) with a jumper to open the fourth quarter. But Long Beach State would hold a comfortable lead the rest of the way. A three from Woodley at 4:48 put LBSU back up by double-digits (57-47), before a jumper from Chung at 4:18 extended the Beach's lead to 13 (60-47). Long Beach State did a solid job controlling the ball down the stretch as they closed the game with six-straight points to win 74-59.
Jada Crawshaw led the Beach with eight rebounds, while adding three steals, and one block, while Valenti-Paea dished out four assists and four steals to go along with five boards.
Chung and Lovely Sonnier each tallied six rebounds, while Sonnier put up a pair of blocks.
Hope Hassmann led Cal State Fullerton with 12 points, while Demonnie Lagway added 11, and Ashlee Lewis chipped in 10. Gabi Vidmar finished the game with 10 rebounds, while adding seven points, five steals, and three assists for the Titans.
Long Beach State will play its final home contest of the regular season on Saturday, March 2 when the Beach host UC Irvine at 2 p.m. A senior day ceremony will take place prior to tip-off. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
