Freshman Andee Avery is tied for 13th after 36 holes.
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Long Beach State closed out the first day of competition at the GCU Invite in a tie for fifth place overall, even par on the day, just in front of the hosts Grand Canyon in the 21-team field.
Freshman Andee Avery had the most consistent day for the Beach, finishing with a first-round 71 before matching that score with another 71 in the second round, closing the first day at two under par in a tie for 13th overall. Janae Leovao shot a 4-under 68 in the first round but had the team's drop score in the second to sit at three-over par for the tournament.
That was two strokes behind her sister Jasmine, who was one-over on the first round before shooting an even par 72 in the second to remain at +1 over par for the day in a tie for 26th overall. Senior Angelina Kim was also one-under in the first round with a 71 before carding a 76 in the second round, matching Janae Leovao at three-over in a tie for 40th in the 119-golfer field.
Kristina Ponomareva rebounded from a forgettable first round to count in the team's scoring in the second with a two-over par 74. Long Beach State's five-under par first round as a team helped keep the Beach firmly in the top half of the 21-team field and within two strokes of a podium finish entering the final day.
