Long Beach State Improves To 5-0-1
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Kellan Montgomery and Grant Cherry combined on a five-hitter as Long Beach State completed a weekend sweep of Omaha 4-1 Sunday afternoon at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Tyler Bishop led off the Omaha second with a double down the left field line. Long Beach State starter Montgomery struck out Joel Benes looking. Haiden Hunt's infield single put the Mavs on the corners. Hunt attempted to steal but was thrown out by Dirtbags catcher John Newman Jr. Montgomery recorded his third strikeout as he got Sid deMayo swinging.
Newman Jr. reached on an error by Omaha third baseman Cardel Dick to begin the bottom of the second. Connor Charpiot's sac bunt moved Newman Jr. to second. Kyle Ashworth doubled to the right center gap to score Newman Jr. Adrian Lopez's infield single advanced Ashworth to third. Nick Marinconz's bunt plated Ashworth for a 2-0 score.
Henry Zipay reached on a one-out error in the Mavs' third. Montgomery hit Matt Goetzmann. Jackson Trout ran for Goetmann, who received a cut to his ear on the play. Dick's opposite field to right scored Zipay. Trent Burkhalter hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Cole Santander posted a two-out single in the bottom of the third. Newman Jr. reached on an error by shortstop Tyler Palmer. Brayden Curtis, the second Omaha pitcher of the day, walked Charpiot to load the bases. Ashworth flew out to center to end the frame.
Omaha failed to take advantage of the fourth and sixth errors that put the tying run on base. Montgomery pitched out of the threats in both innings to keep the score 2-1.
Alex Champagne led off the LBSU seventh with an opposite field double to left center. Ty Borgogno beat out a bunt for a single to give the Dirtbags runners on the corners. Borgogno stole second to keep Long Beach State out of the double play. To load the bases, Jack Hammond walked against Matt Dreher (the Mavs' third pitcher of the game).
Luke Gainer relieved Dreher. His first batter was Santander, who singled in Champagne. Newman Jr. hit a shot to Dick at third, who had only one play, stepping on the bag at third as Borgogno scored. Charpiot's grounder to short was fielded by Palmer, who threw to third to retire pinch-runner Justin Roulston. Dick bobbled an Ashworth grounder, but he threw on to first to get the Mavs out of the inning.
Montgomery limited Omaha to four hits in seven innings. The sophomore righty struck out seven and did not walk a batter or give up an earned run. Montgomery threw 93 pitches, 65 for strikes. Cherry relieved Montgomery to begin the eighth.
Cherry retired the Mavs in order in the eighth and put down the first two batters of the Omaha ninth before allowing a Drew Lechnir double. Hunt popped up to second to end the game.
Ashworth and Santander combined for four of the eight (two each) hits for the Dirtbags. Hunt tallied two of the five Mavs hits.
Long Beach State (5-0-1) travels to No. 20 UCLA (3-3) Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
