The Dirtbags took advantage of a UCLA mistake in the top of the first. Kyle Ashworth struck out against Bruins' starter Luke Rodriguez with one out, but a Blake Balsz passed ball allowed Ashworth to reach first. With two outs, John Newman Jr. smacked his first home run of the season, a blast to left center to make it 2-0 in favor of Long Beach State.
Adrian Lopez was hit by a Rodriguez pitch with one out in the top of the second. Lopez stole second second with two outs and advanced to third on a Balsz throwing error. Armando Briseno's flare to center dropped in, allowing Lopez to score the third LBSU run.
Duce Gourson led off the UCLA second with an opposite field single to left. The Long Beach State starter, Josh Donegan, hit Mulivai Levu to put runners on first and second. Donegan got up 1-2 in the count against Roch Cholowsky before the Bruins' third baseman hit into a 4-6-3 double play. Jack Holman ran the count to 3-2 before working out a walk for UCLA. A 1-0 Dongan pitch hit Payton Brennan to load the bases. Balsz hit a grounder to Lopez at short. His throw pulled first baseman Jack Hammond off the bag. Hammond tagged Balsz for the final out. Upon an instant replay review, the call was confirmed, sending the game into the third with the Dirtbags up 3-0.
Ashworth tripled down the right field line to open the Long Beach State third. Cole Santander's sac fly drove in a run. Hammond's grounder to third scored Newman Jr. Connor Charpiot doubled to left center gap. Lopez, a freshman, hit his first career home, an opposite field shot to right center for a 7-0 game.
Dean West led off the bottom of the third. AJ Salgado singled through the right side to push West to third. With UCLA's leading hitter, Cody Schrier (.519), at-bat, West scored on a Donegan wild pitch. Donegan battled back to get Schrier to pop out to second for the first out. Down in the count 1-2, Gourson homered for the third time this season to make it 7-3.
Ty Borgogno reached on catchers' interference by Balsz with one out in the top of the fourth. Borgogno moved to second when Lee failed in a pickoff attempt and threw the ball into foul territory. Ashworth walked to bring up Santander. The Dirtbags' designated hitter flew out to deep left center. Borgogno and Ashworth completed a successful double steal attempt before a 3-2 Lee pitch hit Newman Jr. Hammond flew out to left to end the inning.
Holman took advantage of the LBSU shift against the lefthanded batter and bunted down the third base line for a single to begin the UCLA fourth. Brennan walked. Balsz bunted for a base hit that loaded the bases. With the lefthanded hitting West coming to the plate, Long Beach State went to the bullpen and called upon lefty Cristien Banda to relieve Donegan. West hit a grounder to Armando Briseno at short. He threw to Lopez for an out. Lopez's throw was wide and high. Two runs scored on the play. A Banda pitch hit Salgado before Schrier walked to load the bases. As Gourson came to the plate, Nick Williams replaced Banda for the Dirtbags.
With the count 2-2, Gourson singled to right, driving in two runs to tie the game at seven. Williams struck out Levu. Brock Cholowsky worked the count to 3-2 before Williams struck him out looking.
Borgogno singled with one out in the top of the sixth. Caedon Kottinger, the third UCLA pitcher of the game, issued back-to-back walks to Ashworth and Santander to load the bases. Nate Leibold replaced Kottinger. Leibold struck out Newman Jr. to bring up Hammond. Mired in a 1-for-26 slump, Hammond singled up the middle to plate Borgogno and Ashworth and returned the advantage to the Dirtbags 9-7.
Alexander Mihalakis relieved Williams to begin the UCLA sixth and gave up a Salgado triple to start the frame. Schrier reached on an error as Salgado scored. Gourson grounded out to first, allowing Schrier to move to second. Milhalakis attempted to pick Schrier off at second. He lost the grip on the ball, which ended up in short leftfield. Schrier scored on the play to tie the game for the second time.
Lopez opened the LBSU seventh with a single. He advanced to second on an error by West, the UCLA left fielder. Lopez moved up to third when Alex Champagne grounded out. The Bruins brought the infield in against Briseno. Briseno hit a grounder to Cholowsky at third. His throw was high, allowing Lopez to score.
A pitch hit Holman to begin the bottom of the seventh. He stole second with one out. Balsz singled to right to drive in Holman and tie the game again. Pinch runner Phoenix Call went to second on a Milhalakis balk. Milhalakis' second strikeout of the inning was West. Salgado walked. Grant Cherry relieved Milhalakis. His first batter was Schrier, who battled to a walk to load the bases. Gourson hit a ball to the deepest part of the stadium, centerfield, where Champagne went up and made a leaping catch for the final out.
Cody Delvecchio walked Santander and Newman Jr. to begin the top of the eighth. Hammond hit a shot to third, where Cholowsky bobbled the ball, allowing it to reach left field. Santander came around to score for an 11-10 LBSU lead.
Levu walked to lead off the bottom of the eighth. Toussaint Bythewood ran for Levu as Chlolowsky came to the plate. Cherry earned the strikeout on four pitches. Bythewood advanced to second when Cherry threw the ball away on a failed pickoff attempt. Holman walked. Cherry struck out Brennan. Quintt Landis, in his first at-bat of the night, singled through the right side to drive in Bythewood to create an 11-11 score.
In the ninth, both closers, UCLA's Rashad Ruff and the Dirtbags' Mike Villani, kept the opponents at bay. Ruff retired Long Beach State in order in the top of the 10th.
Cholowsky appeared to have reached on a one-out error in the bottom of the 10th, but after a replay review, he was called out. Holman singled through the right side before moving to second on a Villani wild pitch. Brennan's opposite field single scored Holman for the gamewinning run.
