Four LBSU Pitchers Combine For A Six-Hitter & 12 Strikeouts
LONG BEACH, Calif.---Four Long Beach State pitchers combined on a six-hitter and 12 strikeouts as the Dirtbags defeated Omaha 6-0 Saturday night at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
The Mavericks advanced runners into scoring position in each of the first three innings but could not take advantage.
Connor Charpiot's opposite field single to right began the Dirtbags' second. Jack Collins reached on an error to bring up Adrian Lopez. The freshman shortstop singled through the left side to score Charpiot and give Long Beach State the lead. Nick Marinconz's sacrifice bunt was successful in advancing both runners.
Alex Champagne singled up the middle to drive in a pair to make it 3-0. Kyle Ashworth's single allowed Champagne to get to third. Ashworth stole second, but both runners were stranded with Charlie Bell, Omaha's starting pitcher, who struck out Cole Santander to end the inning.
Lopez led off the LBSU fourth with a walk. He moved to second on a Marinconz single. Champagne's sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base as he missed beating the play out for a hit. Ty Borgogno singled to left center to plate both runners.
Santander led off the fifth with an opposite field single to rightfield. Jack Hammond grounded into a fielder's choice that forced Santander at second. Hammond stole second before a Bell pitch hit Charpiot. Hammond and Charpiot successfully pulled off a double steal. Collins' fly ball to center was deep enough to result in a sacrifice to score Hammond and push Charpiot to third. Bell struck out Lopez with Long Beach State leading 6-0.
Coming off a 10-strikeout performance in his first start, sophomore lefty Myles Patton struck out seven and did not walk a batter until the top of the seventh when Trent Burkhalter was issued a free pass. Nick Williams relieved Patton and struck out Henry Zipay. Zach Lechnir reached on an infield single. Williams walked Drew Lechnir to load the bases.
Alexander Milhalakis relieved Williams to face Haiden Hunt in a right-right matchup. Milhalakis struck out Hunt. Milhalakis struck out Noah Greise to close matters.
The fourth Long Beach State pitcher of the game, Jonathan Largaespada, retired the first two Omaha batters of the top of the eighth before issuing a single to Tyler Bishop. Largaespada walked Burkhalter before getting Zipay to hit a grounder back to the junior righty in the circle. He tossed onto first to end the frame. Largaespada posted two strikeouts in the top of the ninth as the game ended.
Patton has recorded 17 strikeouts in his first 10.2 innings of the 2024 season. Borgogno was 2-for-4 with two RBI. The Dirtbags charted nine hits, with eight LBSU starters recording a base knock. The Dirtbags stole five bases on the night. Three Omaha pitchers struck out 10. Greise went 2-for-4 to top the Mavs.
Long Beach State (4-0-1) and Omaha (0-5) conclude the series on Sunday. Coverage on ESPN+ begins at 1 p.m.
