Long Beach State Outlasts The Mavs In Extra Innings
Haiden Hunt reached on an error to lead off the game. With one out, Matt Goetzmann worked out a walk against LBSU starter CJ Hood. Hood posted his second strikeout of the inning when he got Trent Burkhalter swinging. Both runners moved up a base on a Dirtbags' passed ball with Joel Benes at the plate. Benes' opposite field double to right center plated both runners. Tyler Bishop walked before Cardel Dick flew out to right to bring the inning to a close.
Ty Borgogno walked to open the Dirtbags first. With two outs, Jack Hammond walked against Mavs' starter Caleb Riedel. John Newman Jr walked to load the bases. Connor Charpiot tied the score with a single to left center that scored Borgogno and Jack Hammond. The LBSU shortstop, Armando Briseno, singled up the middled to drive in Newman Jr. to put Long Beach State into the lead.
Alex Champagne led off the bottom of the second with a double and moved to third on a Borgogno single. Borgogno stole second. Kyle Ashworth's sac fly to center scored Champagne. Ashworth advanced to third on a Riedel wild pitch and scored on a Santander sac fly, increasing the lead to 5-2.
Charpiot singled through the left side with one out in the bottom of the third. Briseno reached on an error, giving LBSU runners on first and second. Nick Marinconz doubled into the left field corner to drive in Charpiot. A pitch hit Champagne to load the bases. Riedel struck out Borgogno before Ashworth tripled to deep center to drive in all three runs. A pitch hit Santander. Omaha went to the bullpen with runners on the corners, bringing in Carter Navin, who recorded the final out.
The Dirtbags took advantage of an Omaha error in the fourth to score a run.
Hunt walked to begin the fifth. Drew Lechnir followed with a single. Goetzmann walked to load the bases. Josh Donegan relieved Hood. His first batter was Burkhalter, who posted a sac fly to drive in Hunt. Donegan struck out Benes, looking for the second out. Donegan closed the inning by striking out Bishop.
David Ladjevic relieved Donegan to begin the seventh. Two of the first three batters reached base for Omaha with a wild pitch, putting the runners at second and third with one out. Burkhalter walked to load the bases. Benes was hit by a pitch for an RBI. Bishop singled up the middle to make it 10-5 and keep the bases loaded.
Nick Wallerstedt entered in favor of Ladjevic. His first batter was Dick, who hit a shot to the fence in left field. The ball appeared to be stuck but was ruled in play, creating an inside-the-park grand slam home run and a 10-9 game. Tyler Palmer flew out against Wallerstedt, who was relieved by Van Larson to create a lefty-lefty matchup against Henry Zipay. Zipay flew out to complete the frame.
Larson retired the first two batters of the Mavs' eighth before giving way to Mike Villani in a righty-righty matchup against Goetzmann. Down 1-2 in the count, Goetzmann doubled to left center. Villani bounced back, striking out Burkhalter for the final out.
Benes led off the top of the ninth with an opposite field single through the right side. Jackson Trout pinch-ran for Benes. Attempting to lay down a sac bunt, Bishop ended up with a single at first as Trout took second. A Villani wild pitch allowed both runners to move up a base. Dick's sacrifice fly to center drove in Trout and allowed Bishop to move to third. With the infield in, Palmer struck out. Zipay struck out to keep it knotted at 10.
Luke Gainer, who entered the game for Omaha in the seventh, retired the first nine batters he faced before hitting Marinconz to begin the bottom of the 10th. Gainer retired Champagne for the first out and was relieved by Chris Byhre. Byhre's appearance started by facing the Dirtbags' leadoff hitter, Borgogno. Borgogno fouled out to first on Byhre's first pitch. Marinconz stole second before Ashworth walked on four pitches, setting the stage for Santander's home run.
Charpiot went 2-for-5 with two RBI to pace the Dirtbags. Ashworth and Santander both drove in four runs. Goetzmann was 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Mavs. Villani picked up the win with 2.1 innings of relief. Gainer was the losing pitcher after tossing 3.1 innings in relief for Omaha.
Long Beach State (3-0-1) and Omaha (0-4) continue the series Saturday night. First pitch is 6 p.m.
