No. 12 Long Beach State With Dominant Win Over Toronto 17-3 In Tuesday Matchup

LONG BEACH, Calif.- No. 12 Long Beach State Women's Water Polo came away with a dominant 17-3 win over University of Toronto on Tuesday, February 20th. Anne de Kleer led all players with five goals while goalie Chelsea Olivier shined with nine saves.
The Beach started the game off strong with five goals in the first quarter, with their first goal coming at 7:41 by Mariah Walker. de Kleer scored her first goal of the game in a 5-meter play and added a second goal at 1:07. Two goals by Martina Cardona and Elisa Portillo to end the quarter up 5-1.
Toronto's defense only held the Beach to one second quarter goal. Rachael Kowalchick adds one to the scoreboard at 5:46. The Varsity Blues added two goals of their own as the Beach headed into halftime up 6-3.
The Beach defense stepped up big, holding Toronto to a scoreless third quarter and put up seven goals of their own. de Kleer found the cage with back-to-back goals to start the third quarter. Kowalchick fired in her second goal of the game with the assist from Grace Cuozzo. Another goal from Cardona and Kathryn McCullough knocked in three more goals of her own to help the Beach take a commanding 10 point lead to end the quarter.
Both teams exchanged goals to start the final quarter until Mariah Walker found the back of the net at 5:51. Portillo with a great pass to Hailey Multz who fights to get it in the cage for her first goal of the game. A goal from Emma Vertiz and de Kleer's fifth goal of the game lift the Beach to victory. Oliver and the Beach defense stood their ground, holding the Varsity Blues to another scoreless period.
The Beach are set to compete in the Barbara Kalbus Invite February 23-25. Their first game is set for Friday, February 23rd as they will take on No. 7 Arizona State at 3:45 p.m. Beach fans can follow along at thefosh.net
