No. 12 Long Beach State Takes Down No. 7 Arizona State In Barbara Kalbus Invite

The Beach will face No. 2 Hawai’i Saturday, February 24 at 10:30 a.m.
IRVINE, Calif.- No. 12 Long Beach State Women's Water Polo opened the Barbara Kalbus Invite with a big win over No. 7 Arizona State in their first match of the tournament Friday. Lara Luka led all players with four goals and three assists. Chelsea Oliver was steady in the cage with eight saves in the win.
Long Beach State came out fighting from the start as two players drew exclusions that led to a power play goal from Mariah Walker at 7:29 to get the team on the board first. Arizona State answered back with a goal of their own before Lara Luka found Elisa Portillo to maintain a one-point lead. In the last two minutes, Portillo found the back of the cage and Luka quickly scored again on a penalty shot to increase the Beach lead to 4-1 at the end of the first period.
Walker started off the second quarter with another early goal at 7:34. Both sides exchanged shots for the next three minutes before the Sun Devils scored two goals to cut the Beach lead down to two. In the last possession of the half, Portillo worked to get the ball to Luka who picked up her second goal of the game for a 6-3 halftime lead.
Both teams came out strong in the second half, exchanging goals and making big defensive stops. Arizona State would score the first goal of the period on the penalty shot. The Beach offense got rolling through two goals from Kathryn McCullough and one from Lara Luka to maintain the lead at 9-6 through three.
Portillo scored first for the Beach with an assist from Luka to start the fourth period. The Sun Devils would respond with two goals of their own to cut the lead, but a fourth goal from Luka helped seal the win. Oliver also came up with two big saves in the final period to help hold off the Sun Devils.
The Beach will play No. 2 Hawaii on Saturday, February 24th at 10:30 a.m. at Corona del Mar High School, with a second game following later in the day.
