Dirtbags & Washington Play To 3-3 17-Inning Tie

2/18/2024 7:31:00 PM | Baseball

Teams Play Until Game Was Called Due To Huskies Travel

LONG BEACH, Calif.—Long Beach State and Washington played to a 3-3 tie Sunday afternoon at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field. The game was called with one out in the bottom of the 17th inning because the Huskies needed to catch their return flight to Seattle.

A Kellen Montgomery pitch hit Luke Rohleder to begin the top of the third. Blake Wilson's bunt single advanced Rohlender to second. A pitch hit Colin Blanchard to load the bases. Cam Clayton fouled out to bring up AJ Guerrero. Guerrero's sacrifice fly drove in Rohleder for the game's first run. Jeter Ybarra flew out to center to end the inning.

Cole Santander tied the game at one when he led off the Long Beach State fourth with a home run. John Newman Jr followed by reaching on an error. The Dirtbags' catcher stole second where he saw Connor Charpiot recover from being down 0-2 in the count to work out a walk. Newman Jr was picked off at second for the second out by Washington starter Spencer Dessart before Adrian Lopez walked. Nick Marinconz flew out to left for the final out.

Wilson opened the top of the eighth with a double down the left-field line. Blanchard successfully sacrificed Wilson to third with a bunt. The Dirtbags brought the infield in against Clayton. The decision worked as Clayton hit a shot to Adrian Lopez at short. He looked Wilson back to third and threw onto first for the second out.

Grant Cherry relieved Alexander Mihalakis (who came on in the sixth to replace Montgomery) to face Guerrero. Guerrero hit a shot deep in the hole at third to Ty Borgogno, who could field the ball and throw onto first to get the Dirtbags out of the Washington eighth.

Newman Jr. walked with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Charpiot went down 0-2 in the count to Huskies' reliever Isaac Yeager before recording a single to center. Josh Emanuels became Washington's third pitcher of the day and faced Lopez. Lopez ran the count to 3-2 before striking out swinging, sending the game to extra innings.

With the shift on, Clayton hit an opposite-field single to right off LBSU closer Mike Villani with one out in the top of the 11th. Guerrero followed with a single to center. Ybarra flew out to left. Villani went up 0-2 in the count to Aiva Arquette before Washington's clean-up hitter posted an opposite-field single to right to score Clayton. Michael Brown grounded out to first to conclude the frame.

Kyle Ashworth singled to begin the LBSU 11th. Santander's infield single to second put the go-ahead run at first. Justin Roulston (Ashworth) and Landon Greenhouse (Santander) entered as pinch runners as Jack Hammond came to bat. Hammond grounded into a double play as Roulston took third. Newman Jr tied the game with a flare that dropped in center. Newman Jr was thrown out attempting to steal to extend the game.

Sam DeCarlo worked out a walk against the sixth Long Beach State pitcher of the day, Nathen Morris, to begin the top of the 12th. Rohlender attempted to sacrifice DeCarlo to second, but his bunt was caught by Newman Jr. Wilson popped up to second before Colton Bower hit a grounder to Lopez at short. Lopez bobbled the chance, allowing both runners to advance. Clayton flew out to right to keep the game tied.

Guerrero singled up the middle to lead off the top of the 13th. Ybarra hit an opposite-field double to left center to score Guerrero. Roulston walked with one out in the bottom of the 13th. Pinch hitter Nolan Funke doubled to the left-center gap to score Roulston and tie the game again. Funke advanced to third on a Gianluca Shinn (who entered the game in the top of the inning in relief of Emanuels) wild pitch. Hammond was intentionally walked. Newman Jr. grounded into a double play to keep the game alive for the Huskies.

While working his second inning of relief, Owen Geiss hit Bower with two outs in the top of the 14th. Clayton singled through the left side. Guerrero grounded out to third for the final out.

Lopez walked with one out in the bottom of the inning. Armando Briseno ran for Lopez as Marinconz came to the plate. Shinn was called for a balk with the count 0-1, moving Briseno to second. Marinconz grounded out to third, but Briseno could not advance on the play. Champagne lined out to short to send it to the 15th.

Funke doubled to right with two outs in the bottom of the 15th but was stranded in scoring position. Wilson singled with two outs in the top of the 16th but was thrown out attempting to steal second to end the inning.

Newman Jr. led off the 16th with an opposite field single to right. With two outs, Marinconz singled to left. A pitch hit Champagne to load the bases. Borgogno flew out to right to extend the game.

Max Fraser, the fifth Washington pitcher of the game, began the bottom of the 17th by hitting Roulston. Roulston was picked off first (1-3-5) before the game was called due to Washington's travel.

Sunday was the first time the Dirtbags played into the 17th inning of a game since Mar. 30, 1973, when Long Beach State played the longest game in recorded team history, a 20-inning 1-1 tie against San Jose State. Sunday's game was the first tie for the Dirtbags since May 2, 2017, when Long Beach State and San Diego played to a 9-9 standoff.
Funke was 2-for-2 after entering the game in extra innings. Santander, Charpiot, and Newman Jr. each posted two hits. Led by Montgomery (5), the Dirtbags' pitchers struck out 12 on the day, raising their series total to 40. Wilson paced the Huskies as he went 3-for-7.

Long Beach State (2-0-1) is scheduled to host North Dakota State (0-3) Tuesday night. ESPN+ coverage begins at 6 p.m.
