SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Freshman Kam Martin scored a career-high 25 points and Devin Askew added 23 as the pair of guards helped lift Long Beach State to a third straight win, grabbing a 76-70 win over San Diego on the road.
Long Beach State (4-8) shot over 50 percent for the third straight contest, a scorching 58.1% from the field led by Martin, who was 8-for-10 overall and a perfect 5-for-5 from three on the night, scoring a career-high 25 points. Devin Askew also had a big night for Long Beach State, chipping in 23 points while tying a career high with eight assists.
San Diego (3-7) started the game on the front foot, opening the contest with a three from Santiago Trouet and eventually opening up an eight-point lead at 15-7 following a three from Kjay Bradley Jr. The Beach was able to slowly chip away, first tying the game at 20 on a three-point play by Austin Johnson and then finally taking their first lead at 25-24 behind an Askew 3-pointer. Long Beach State would lead by as many as five in the first half, and took a 33-30 lead into halftime.
Long Beach State never trailed in the second half, shooting 14-for-19 from the floor and making 13 free throws to help seal the win. The Beach lead by as many as 12, and were up 65-54 after a layup from Askew, but a shocking sequence leading to an 8-0 run for the Toreros gave the game and USD new life.
LBSU was able to calm down the action, as Askew drew a foul to once again increase the lead. The next trip down, great vision from Austin Johnson found Andrew Nagy for an open dunk, and then the big man raced down the floor for a clean block from Johnson. The Beach then worked Askew open for a seven-point lead, and closed out the win 76-70 on the road.
Tuesday's contest was the second game in a row the Beach shot over 50 percent from behind the arc, finishing 7-of-13 overall. Johnson finished with 12 points, joining Martin and Askew in double-figures while guard TJ Wainwright was the team's rebounding leader with seven on the night.
Long Beach State will get a brief break before returning to action against more West Coast Conference opposition, facing Pepperdine on the road on Thursday, December 19.
