Long Beach State Comes Up Short In Five-Set Loss At UC Santa Barbara

Jaida Harris led all scorers with a career-high 19 kills, while Natalie Glenn and Zayna Meyer each tallied double-doubles

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Freshman Jaida Harris turned in a career-high performance, while Natalie Glenn and Zayna Meyer each recorded a double-double for Long Beach State in a tough road loss at UC Santa Barbara, 3-2 [22-25, 25-22, 25-12, 20-25, 13-15] on Saturday night.

With the loss, the Beach fall to 12-8 on the year and 6-4 in The Big West. The Gauchos improve to 10-12 overall and 6-4 in conference action as there is now a four-way tie for third place in the standings between LBSU, UCSB, UC Irvine, and UC San Diego.

Harris led all scorers with a career-high 19 kills to lead a trio of double-figure scorers. The rookie from Las Vegas hit .261 on the night, while also adding one block, one dig, and one assist.

Senior outside hitter Abby Karich was one kill shy of tying her career-high as she finished the contest with 17 kills, eight digs, two aces, two assists, and one block.

Rounding out the Beach's double-figure scorers was senior outside hitter Natalie Glenn who recorded her team-leading ninth double-double of the year with 15 kills and a career-high 19 digs. She also put up four blocks to go along with one assist and one ace.

Senior setter Zayna Meyer collected her fourth double-double of the season as she concluded the match with 49 assists and a career-high tying 18 digs. Meyer was solid from the serving line with three aces, while adding two kills and a pair of blocks.

The opening set was close throughout, but the Gauchos held the lead most of the frame. After UCSB sent the game to set point (24-20), Harris knocked down back-to-back kills to cut the lead down to two (24-22) forcing a Santa Barbara timeout. The Gauchos came out of the break and took the game, 25-22.

The Beach and the Gauchos battled through 10 ties and four lead changes in the second set. After a 6-0 run from UCSB to make it a two-point game (13-11) in favor of the Beach, LBSU called a timeout. Bacon and Glenn went back-to-back to tie the game at 13-all, before Long Beach took a 16-14 lead on a kill by Karich. UCSB cut the Beach's lead back down to one (19-18), but LBSU pushed ahead and took the game to set point (24-21) after a kill and an ace from Meyer. Bacon would knock down a kill from the middle to give the Beach the set, 25-22.

Long Beach State was unstoppable in the third set. The Beach hit jumped out to an early 6-1 lead and never trailed. After back-to-back aces from Karich put LBSU on top 9-3, UC Santa Barbara called for a timeout. The Gauchos utilized their second timeout after Long Beach State took a 13-4 advantage. The Beach scored seven-straight points to open up a 21-6 lead, however, UCSB countered with six-consecutive points of their own to make it a nine-point contest (21-12). Still with a commanding lead, Long Beach State went on to take the third set, 25-12, thanks to a pair of aces from Livi Narancich.



The fourth set saw the Beach and the Gauchos knotted four times. Long Beach State went on a 4-0 run to even the score 20-all as UC Santa Barbara took a timeout. Following the break in action, the Gauchos came out and scored five-straight to win, 25-20, and force a fifth set.

With the match all coming down to the fifth set, UC Santa Barbara jumped out in front early, 5-4, and led 8-6 at the side switch. The Beach battled back and tied the game at 10-all after scoring four-consecutive points. But a 3-0 run from UCSB gave the Gauchos match point (14-12) as they went on to win the set and match, 15-13.

UC Santa Barbara's Sophie Reavis led the way with 18 kills and 13 digs for a double-double. Eva Travis added 16 kills and nine digs, while Cortni Youngblood and Harper Hall each chipped in 13 digs. Layanna Green, Emma McDermott, and Andi Kreiling led the blocking defense with six blocks each.

Long Beach State looks to get back on the winning track on Friday, Nov. 1, when the Beach host UC Riverside at 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid.
