UC Riverside Edges Long Beach State In Five Sets

Zayna Meyer recorded 52 assists and 19 digs for the Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif.—In a match that featured 38 ties and 18 lead changes, UC Riverside defeated Long Beach State 3-2 in Big West women's volleyball action Friday night at the Walter Pyramid.
 
SET 1
UC Riverside scored three of the first four points in the first set. Long Beach State battled back to a 5-5 tie before a Highlanders' 3- 0 spurt resulted in a Beach timeout. LBSU responded with three consecutive points to tie the score.

At 9-9, UCR went on a 5-2 run to regain the lead. The Beach came back with four in a row, which was capped off by Ella Lomigora and Zayna Meyer combining on a block to put the Beach up by one and force a UC Riverside timeout. LBSU scored two of the next three to go up 17-15. UC Riverside bounced back to tie the score at 18 and again at 19.

Long Beach State took a timeout after Trinity Sheridan's kill earned the Highlanders a 20-19 lead. Natalie Glenn and Sheridan exchanged kills for a 21-21 score. Lomgoria and Abby Karich blocked a Sheridan attempt, giving the Beach the lead as UC Riverside called their final timeout.


Back-to-back kills from Karich and Lomigora created the first set point. LBSU went to Glenn for a swing that was ruled out. The Beach challenged the call. After a replay review, the call was overturned, earning Long Beach State a 25-21 set victory.
 
SET 2
The Highlanders jumped out to a 4-1 start in the second set. With Glenn serving, Long Beach State scored five consecutive points to take the lead. Glenn keyed the run with back-to-back service aces, forcing UCR into a timeout. The Highlanders scored out of the break, but LBSU returned for two in a row.

UC Riverside tallied two in a row, tying it at eight. The Beach came back for three in a row in a rally that Jaida Harris and Kameron Bacon capped off by blocking a Carissa Wiles attempt. A UCR kill ended the rally, but the Highlanders were called for being out of rotation. UC Riverside sided out, down 12-9 on Sheridan's kill.  
 
UCR cut the lead to one on three occasions in the middle of the set before knotting the score at 16 when Makena Tong and Sydnee Rowe blocked a Karich swing. UCR scored three consecutive points to increase by two before a Lomigora kill returned the serve to LBSU. Karich's service aced tied at 18. A bad Long Beach State set swung the advantage back to the Highlanders. Harris and Sheridan traded a series of kills as UCR stayed up by one. Sheridan's put UCR up 22-20 as Long Beach State called their final timeout of the set.

Harris and Glenn recorded kills out of the timeout to tie it at 22 for the Beach. UCR challenged Glenn's attempt, which was unsuccessful. Savana Chacon's first service ace of the match returned the lead to LBSU. UC Riverside called a timeout. The Highlanders went to Sheridan, who knotted it at 23 with a kill. UCR earned a set point on a Sophia Ewalefo kill. Glenn went wide, giving UCR a 25-23 victory.
 
SET 3
It was a tight start as the teams played to five ties early in the portion of the set. At 10-10, UCR scored two in a row as the Beach took a timeout. Glenn posted back-to-back kills as the Beach tied it at 13 on a block by Karich and Lomigora. A pair of LBSU unforced errors around a Karich kill maintained a one-point UCR lead.
 
Kailyn Jager's kill of a long rally pushed UCR up by two. Long Beach State went down 17-14 on a hitting error. UCR took its largest lead of the match when Sofia Ewalefo connected on a service ace. The Beach called timeout. LBSU came out with a Lomigora kill to side out. Consecutive kills from Jager pushed the lead to five. Teams traded points over the next four possessions. Chacon's service ace cut it to 22-18. Sherdian's 20th kill again made it a five-point lead for the Highlanders. The Beach sided out on a Grace O'Reilly kill. UCR scored the final two points they needed to secure the set victory 25-20.
 
SET 4
Long Beach State started strong in the fourth set, opening the frame by outscoring UC Riverside 4-2. Karich's service ace put the Beach up 7-4 when Livi Narancich's service ace resulted in LBSU taking a 9-5 lead and UC Riverside calling timeout.
 
A long rally from the timeout ended when LBSU setter Zayna Meyer swung for a kill. The Beach would work the lead to 14-6, the largest advantage of the match for LBSU, when Glenn and Lomgoria combined on a block. UCR called their second timeout down 15-6.  
 
UC Riverside got back into the set, cutting the lead to 19-10 as LBSU took a timeout. The Highlanders got to 19-12 on an Ewalefo service ace. Karich's kill gave the Beach a side out. Meyer followed with a kill. At 21-13, UCR committed an unforced error for a nine-point LBSU advantage. The Beach would head to a fifth set for the fourth time in their past five matches by winning the set by a 25-14 count.
 
SET 5
UC Riverside served as the teams traded points to start the set. A long rally resulted in a Jager cutter for a 2-1 UCR lead. Glenn wend down the line to tie it 2-2. Sheridan's 26th kill down the opposite line made it 3-2. Jessica Dean committed a service error to tie the score.
 
Sheridan appeared to have committed a hitting error, putting the Beach up 4-3. The Highlanders challenged the call, and the replay decision was upheld for Long Beach State. On the next play, Sheridan was credited with a kill that tied the match. LBSU challenged the call, and the play was upheld. Ewalefo committed a hitting error for Long Beach State's side out. UCR player for a 6-4 LBSU advantage. The Highlanders responded with an Ewalefo kill to return to serve. Meyer was out on a kill for a 6-6 score. Lomorigora's attack down the middle of the court put LBSU on top 7-6.
 
Sheridan's successful attack resulted in it being 7-7. Lomigora's hitting error made the teams switch sides, with UCR leading 8-7. Misu Nguyen's service increased the advantage to two. Lomigora recorded two of the following three points as the Beach regained the lead 10-9. Back-to-back Sheridan kills regained the lead for the Highlanders at 11-10 as LBSU called timeout.
 
Beatriz Silva tried to go short on her attack, but the ball went into the net for an 11-11 score. Meyer set Glenn on a back pass for a kill. 12-12 came on a Layla Hooks kill. After a conference among the officials, Glenn's attack was ruled to be a kill. UCR challenged the ruling and was unsuccessful. Karich and Bacon blocked a Sheridan attack, resulting in a double match point for the Beach and a UCR timeout. Sheridan and Hooks blocked a Karich attack.
 
Up 14-13, Long Beach State called timeout. Rowe tied the match when she put down an LBSU overpass. Sheridan's 30th kill earned UCR its first match point. Karich was ruled to have committed a hitting error. The Beach challenged the Highlanders to be on the net simultaneously. The replay favored the Highlanders, making it the final 16-14.
 
THE STATS
Long Beach State hit .233 as a team (68-23-193), compared to .217 (64-24-184) for UC Riverside. The Beach outdug the Highlanders 107-101 and held a 10-7 advantage in total team blocks.
 
Meyer recorded a double-double of 52 assists and 19 digs. Glenn also charted a double-double with 13 kills and 18 digs. Karich led the Beach with 14 kills.
 
Sheridan led four Highlanders (8-16, 3-8 Big West) with double-doubles as she posted 31 kills and 10 digs. Jager had 10 kills and 14 digs. Ewalwfo had 10 kills and 17 digs. Tong had 40 assists and 13 digs.
