Long Beach State will face three top-20 teams, with a fourth game to be determined.
LONG BEACH, Calif.—After competing in the MPSF Invitational last weekend, No. 7 Long Beach State will head for the Big West/WCC Clash. They will play four games including contests with No. 9 UC Irvine, No. 13 Loyola Marymount, and No. 16 Cal Baptist, with a fourth game to be determined by the results on Saturday and Sunday.
Last weekend the Beach faced some of their toughest tests of the season coming up against No. 2 California and No. 6 Princeton, but they came out of the tournament with two impressive victories over Big West foes UC Irvine and UC Davis. Liam Ward had an outstanding weekend in goal for Long Beach State as he racked up 49 saves in the four games, and had a crucial penalty save against UC Irvine. Robert Lopez Duart continued to lead the way offensively as he scored nine goals to add to his team leading 40 goals this season. Bruno Chiappini also had a strong showing as he scored eight goals and had eight steals.
The opening game of the weekend should be another battle between the Beach and the Anteaters. UC Irvine will be looking to bounce back from their loss to Long Beach State last weekend, as Nikola Jancic hit the sudden death game winner to seal the game for the Beach. UC Irvine would go on to win their next three games in the tournament, improving their record to 7-4 this season. Long Beach State and UC Irvine will square off on Saturday at 9:15 a.m.
Long Beach State's second game will be on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. against Cal Baptist. The Lancers also participated in the MPSF Invitational last weekend, going winless in their four games. They are now 6-8 this season.
Sunday will see the Beach take on Loyola Marymount at 9:15 a.m. The Lions are 5-3 this season and will be looking to win against Long Beach State for the first time since 2009.
