Long Beach State Finishes MPSF Invitational with Commanding Win Over No. 8 UC Davis

9/24/2023 10:10:00 AM | Men's Water Polo

The Beach finish in 7th place with a 2-2 record.

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—No. 11 men's water polo concluded play at the MPSF Invitational on a high note by taking down No. 8 UC Davis, 14-8. The win saw the Beach finish in seventh place in the stacked tournament with a 2-2 record over the weekend.

Long Beach State came out of the gate hot scoring four straight goals to open the game. Bruno Chiappini got things started with an early goal, while Robert Lopez Duart, Riley Catino, and Caleb Francisco followed suit. UC Davis was able to score a goal in the final seconds of the quarter, however, to make the game 4-1 headed into the second period.

In the second quarter, the Beach maintained the momentum they had built in the first by scoring three straight goals to open the quarter. Showcasing a balanced attack, Evan Cain, Nikola Jancic, and Alexander Makshanoff were the goalscorers, but UC Davis would once again score late in the quarter to keep the game close. Two Aggie goals saw the Beach head into halftime with a 7-3 lead.

Playing from behind, UC Davis needed to try to build some momentum of their own and scored first to open the third quarter, but Robert Lopez Duart and Bruno Chiappini responded with goals to put an end to that. UC Davis would score again, but Chiappini had another response to make the score 10-5 after three periods of play.

The fourth quarter was explosive and saw 10 goals between the two teams. Robert Lopez Duart shined in the fourth, as he scored three more goals to give him five for the day, and Chiappini also scored his fourth of the game. The Beach had a response for every UC Davis push and were able to see out the 15-10 victory.

Defensively, Long Beach State was able to grab 12 steals, with Evan Cain leading the team with three. Riley Catino, Bruno Chiappini, and Liam Ward also each had two steals. Ward also had nine saves in goal for Long Beach State.

The Beach is now 10-4 on the season and their season will continue with another tournament next weekend. Long Beach State will be competing in the Big West/WCC Challenge in Irvine. They will play four games throughout the weekend, beginning on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. against UC Irvine.
