9/30/2023 3:40:00 PM | Men's Water Polo
The Beach will continue play in the tournament against Loyola Marymount on Sunday.
IRVINE, Calif.—The Long Beach State men's water polo team got off to a strong start at the Big West-WCC clash as they took down No. 9 UC Irvine and No. 16 Cal Baptist. The two wins improved their record to 12-4 so far this season.
After conceding an early goal, Long Beach State controlled the game against UC Irvine on Saturday morning. They responded with five unanswered goals with Evan Cain scoring three and Robert Lopez Duart and Nikola Jancic each scoring one. Bruno Chiappini also added another goal after UC Irvine scored their second, to give the Beach a 6-2 lead at the half.
The two teams traded goals throughout the second half, with the Beach outscoring the Anteaters 5-4 leading to a 11-6 victory for Long Beach State. Evan Cain finished the game with four goals, Lopez Duart with three, Jancic with two, and Chiappini and Botond Hajdu each scoring one.
A stout defensive effort from the Beach pushed them ahead of UC Irvine, as the team combined for 11 steals. Lopez Duart led the team with three and Alexander Makshanoff had two. Liam Ward continued his strong season as he posted yet another career-high with 17 saves.
Following the win against UC Irvine came a tough battle against Cal Baptist. The Lancers started the game on the right foot going up 3-1 in the first quarter. Evan Cain was able to stay hot on the day scoring the goal for the Beach, but they found themselves behind heading into the second period of play. Long Beach State would flip the script in the second quarter outscoring Cal Baptist 3-1 behind goals from Robert Lopez Duart and Bruno Chiappini.
The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair as the two teams traded goals throughout the quarter, combining for nine goals total. However, Cal Baptist came out on top of that battle, outscoring Long Beach State 5-4 giving them a 9-8 lead going into the fourth. The Lancers would add another goal to their lead to open the fourth quarter, but Long Beach State responded with four straight goals from Marc Frigola, Bruno Chiappini, and Robert Lopez Duart which was enough to hold off the Cal Baptist for a 12-11 victory.
Long Beach State will continue play at the Big West-WCC Clash on Sunday starting with a game against Loyola Marymount at 9:15 a.m. A second game will follow pending results from the day's games. Live stats for both games will be available at theFOSH.net.
