The Beach are back in action on Friday and Saturday at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center
IRVINE, Calif.— The Long Beach State men's water polo team fought hard, but ultimately came up short in two losses to No. 8 UC Davis and No. 13 Loyola Marymount to close out the Big West-WCC Clash.
Long Beach State was involved in a tough battle in the first game as they faced off with Loyola Marymount. Nikola Jancic got the Beach on the board early, but the Lions would outscore Long Beach State 4-1 the rest of the first quarter. They continued their momentum in the second quarter as they shutout the Beach 3-0 in the second quarter giving them a 7-2 lead at the half.
Needing a response, Long Beach State came out firing in the third quarter as Bruno Chiappini scored twice and Alexander Makshanoff added another goal to start the second half on a 3-0 run getting them back into the game. Loyola Marymount would eventually score three goals in the quarter, but Chiappini and Robert Lopez Duart also found the back of the net making the score 10-7 after three quarters of play.
The Lions opened the fourth quarter with two more goals, but the Beach would dig deep for four straight goals of their own, cutting the lead down to one. Both teams would go on to score late goals, as the Beach fell just short, dropping the contest 13-12.
Bruno Chiappini led the way with five goals, and Robert Lopez Duart added three of his own. Chiappini and Lopez Duart also had three steals each.
The second game of the day featured Long Beach State taking on UC Davis for the second weekend in a row. After beating the Aggies 15-10 last week, the Beach started off on the right foot behind consecutive goals from Evan Cain and Marc Frigola. Robert Lopez Duart added a third after a UC Davis goal to give Long Beach State a 3-1 lead after the first period.
However, it was UC Davis who would close the half strong, outscoring Long Beach State 5-2 in the second quarter giving them a 6-5 lead at halftime. The two teams traded goals throughout the second half, but a crucial three-goal stretch late in the fourth quarter was enough to seal the 12-10 victory for UC Davis. Evan Cain led the Beach with four goals, giving him five on the day.
Long Beach State's season will continue next weekend as they return to Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center for three games. On Friday they will play two games starting with UC Davis at noon and Golden West College at 3 p.m. They will also host No. 4 Pepperdine on Saturday at 7 p.m.
