10/6/2023 5:05:00 PM | Men's Water Polo

The Beach is back in action on Saturday, as they host No. 3 Pepperdine at 7 p.m.

LONG BEACH, Calif.— The Long Beach State men's water polo team faced a tough UC Davis team for the third consecutive week and came up just short in a 9-8 loss but bounced back with a victory over Golden West College in the afternoon. Long Beach State and UC Davis were both locked in defensively, however it was the Aggie who were able to come out on top.

The first game against No. 7 UC Davis was a battle until the final whistle. Lopez Duart got the Beach started with two goals to open the game, but UC Davis would respond with two goals to tie the game. Long Beach State would regain momentum in the second quarter as they opened the quarter with three straight goals from Lopez Duart, Botond Hajdu, and Nikola Jancic. The Aggies would pull one back, but a late goal from Lopez Duart would give the Beach a 6-3 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter it was UC Davis' turn to come out firing as they erased the deficit and would take the lead after opening the quarter with four straight goals. Goals from Bruno Chiappini and Evan Cain would restore the lead for Long Beach State, but UC Davis would find the equalizer with under a minute left in the quarter. The fourth quarter was a defensive battle as both teams had trouble finding their rhythm on offense. However, UC Davis would find the back of the cage which was enough to give them the 9-8 victory.

Long Beach State followed the game against UC Davis with an exhibition against Golden West College, which they won 17-9. Bruno Chiappini, Caleb Francisco, and Lopez Duart scored three goals each, while eight total players added their names on the scoresheet. Gabe Haddad had a strong showing in goal with 11 saves in three quarters of play and Riley Catino had an all-around game with two goals, four assists, and two steals.

Long Beach State is now 12-7 this season and are back in action on Saturday, as they host No. 3 Pepperdine at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats will be available on theFOSH.net.
