Robert Lopez Duart Scores Sudden Death Winner As Long Beach State Upsets Pepperdine

10/7/2023 9:52:00 PM | Men's Water Polo

Saturday's victory is the second time Long Beach State has defeated a Top-5 oppopnent this season.

LONG BEACH, Calif.—Following the tough loss to UC Davis on Friday, the Long Beach State men's water polo looked to bounce back against No. 3 Pepperdine, and they did so in a big way coming away with an 11-10 sudden death victory. Saturday's win is the second time the Beach have upset a top-five team this season.

Long Beach State opened the game full of energy, as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead holding Pepperdine scoreless in the first quarter. Robert Lopez Duart, Bruno Chiappini, and Caleb Francisco were all able to find the back of the net to give the Beach the lead.

Pepperdine responded early in the second quarter with a goal, but the two teams traded goals for the remainder of the quarter. Long Beach State maintained its three-goal lead behind two goals from Riley Catino and a third from Evan Cain making the score 6-3 after the first half.

The Waves started the third quarter in a similar fashion, scoring two early goals to cut the lead down to one. Alexander Makshanoff put the Beach back on the scoresheet with a goal, but Pepperdine responded with a third goal of the quarter. They would go on to score two more goals in the quarter, but so would Long Beach State with a goal from Cain and a spectacular individual goal from Riley Catino to make the score 9-7 headed into the final period.

The fourth quarter was a defensive stalemate between the two teams before Pepperdine would score a goal with 1:49 remaining in the game to cut the lead down once again to one. Needing to find an equalizer, the Waves replaced their goalkeeper with a field player to give them an advantage on offense. The strategy was successful as they were able to score the game tying goal with just two seconds remaining.

The two overtime periods were once again a tough defensive battle as scoring opportunities were hard to come by for both teams. Pepperdine scored first with 1:30 left in the first overtime period, but Bruno Chiappini leveled the score with just 21 seconds left. The two teams held each other scoreless in the second overtime period forcing death.

Pepperdine won the spring to open the sudden death period, but the Beach defense came up with a big stop. Robert Lopez Duart found himself in front of goal, and after the Pepperdine goalkeeper denied his first attempt, he gathered the rebound and put the ball in the back of the net to give Long Beach State the 11-10 victory.

Long Beach State moves to 13-7 this season and will return to Big West play with a game at UC Irvine on Friday, October 13 at 7 p.m.
