Long Beach State will wrap up play at the MPSF Invitational on Sunday.
LOS ANGELES, Calif.— The Long Beach State men's water polo team faced a big challenge on Saturday as they faced off with No. 1 California and No. 4 Princeton. Despite playing tough in both games, the Beach came up just short as they lost both contests.
In the opening game of the day, No. 11 Long Beach State faced their toughest test of the season as they came up against No. 1 California. The Beach battled in the first half as Robert Lopez Duart and Riley Catino each scored, while the Long Beach State defense held California to three goals.
The Golden Bears came out aggressively in the second half scoring four straight goals to extend their lead to 7-2. However, Long Beach State responded with back-to-back goals from Lopez Duart and Evan Cain. Lopez Duart would complete his hat trick in the fourth quarter, and Reed Pantaleon found the back of the net as well, but California would outscore Long Beach State 3-2 the rest of the game to win by a final score of 10-6.
The second game of the day also presented a formidable opponent in the No. 4 ranked Princeton Tigers. It was a back-and-forth affair between the two teams with six lead changes throughout the game. Long Beach State found themselves in front at halftime with a 4-3 lead behind goals from Evan Cain, Riley Catino, Caleb Francisco, and Marc Frigola, but a strong third quarter from Princeton was enough to give them the advantage for the remainder of the game. Two late goals from Bruno Chiappini cut the Princeton lead down to one, but the Tigers were able to hold on for the 9-8 victory.
Defensively for the Beach, Liam Ward posted back-to-back games with 12 saves as he continues his strong season in goal for the Beach. Ward also managed to grab three steals against Princeton to lead the team for the day.
Long Beach State will conclude play at the MPSF Invitational in the seventh-place game on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. where they will face either Pepperdine or UC Davis.
