LONG BEACH, Calif.—Long Beach State Men's Water Polo is back in action this weekend as they open the 2023 campaign at the Triton Invitational. The Beach will play four games during the tournament, with their first against Concordia on Saturday at 8 a.m.
Long Beach State enters the 2023 season ranked No. 9 nationally by the Collegiate Water Polo Association. Following a season where they finished with a record of 21-9 and in second place in the Golden Coast Conference, the Beach will rejoin the Big West Conference as the league is bringing back men's water polo after a 22-year hiatus.
Big West Preseason Coaches' Team selections Evan Cain and Bruno Chiappini will look to build off solid 2022 seasons. Cain was fourth on the team in goals with 41 and recorded 24 assists, while Chiappini scored 37 goals and also added 16 assists and 19 steals. Senior Guillermo Ocasio will also look to impress in his first season at Long Beach State after transferring from UCLA.
Defensively, Liam Ward returns for his junior season and looks to take over as the team's starting goalkeeper. Ward enters the season after appearing in 11 games in 2022, making 52 saves and finishing with a 5-1 record.
After the season opener this weekend, Long Beach State will take on No. 4 Stanford on Saturday at noon. The Beach will also play two games on Sunday, as they face No. 20 Navy at 8 a.m. and Pomona-Pitzer at 1:15 p.m.
