Long Beach State Picked to Finish Second in Big West Conference; Three Named to Coaches’ Team

Evan Cain, Bruno Chiappini, and Guillermo Ocasio were all selected to the Preseason All-Big West Coaches' team.
LONG BEACH, Calif.-- With the 2023 men's water polo season starting this weekend, Long Beach State has been picked to finish second in the Big West Conference as the league announced in its Preseason Coaches' Poll Tuesday Morning.
Long Beach State and UC Davis each received two first place votes, but UC Davis took the top spot in the poll with more overall points. UC Santa Barbara finished even on points with the Beach in second place, followed by UC Irvine and UC San Diego, while Cal State Fullerton rounded out the poll as the bottom pick.
In addition, three Long Beach State student-athletes were selected to the Preseason Coaches Team. Junior Attacker Evan Cain was named to the team after being named to the Golden Coast Conference Honorable Mention after the 2022 season. Cain scored 41 goals and recorded 24 assists during his sophomore campaign. Sophomore Bruno Chiappini was also named to the preseason team. The Sao Paulo, Brazil Native had a successful debut season at the Beach where he notched 37 goals, 16 assists, and 19 steals. Senior transfer Guillermo Ocasio was the final player named to the team. Prior to Long Beach State, Ocasio played in two seasons at UCLA where he scored 12 goals and had four assists.
Long Beach State kicks off their season this weekend with four games at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, starting against Concordia on Saturday at 8 a.m.
