The pair of transfers will bring added experience to Long Beach State for the 2023-24 season
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Head Women's Basketball Coach Amy Wright has announced the signing of graduate transfer Cheyenne Givens and junior transfer Lovely Sonnier to conclude the roster for the 2023-24 season.
Givens comes to Long Beach State after playing at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, Pepperdine, and CSUN. The point guard from Los Angeles began her collegiate career at LATTC where she was named SCC Player of the Year as well as CCCWBCA South Region All-State First Team. She led her team to a conference title and an Elite Eight State Tournament appearance, while averaging 27.7 points per game, 6.8 rebounds per game, and 4.7 assists per game.
Following her freshman season at LATTC, Givens transferred to Pepperdine where she was second on the squad in assists (48), tied for second in steals (27), and third in scoring (7.7 ppg). Her 45.5 field goal percentage was good for third on the team. She went on to lead the Waves in steals with 39 in her junior season, while also ranking 10th in the WCC.
Givens transferred to CSUN where she saw action in six games and averaged 2.2 points per game, while shooting 42.9 percent from long distance.
A three-year letterwinner at J. Serra High School, Givens averaged 12.5 points per game, while also adding 4.2 rebounds per game and 1.9 steals per game as a senior. She earned All-CIF Southern Section Second Team honors, and was named to the Daily Breeze All-Area First Team, as well as took home All-Del Rey League honors. With Givens leading the way, her team won its first Division I State Championship in 2018.
"We are excited to have Cheyenne join our team in the final campaign of her career," said Wright. "She has an explosiveness in her game that will compliment the players we have on our roster. With her ability to knock down the open shot, create off the dribble, and raise havoc defensively, makes her a triple threat for us on the floor."
Sonnier comes to LBSU after playing her first two seasons at South Carolina State. She will provide the Beach with extreme versatility on both ends of the floor as she is coming off a sophomore campaign in which she led the Lady Bulldogs in rebounding with 8.2 board per game. Her 9.1 points per game were good for second on the squad, while she shot 41.2 percent from the field.
In her freshman season at SCSU, Sonnier played in 25 games and made eight starts as she averaged 4.4 rebounds and 3.2 points per game.
Sonnier prepped at Mission High School where she averaged 17.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 8.0 assists, 6.0 blocks, and 5.0 steals per game. She was named a Top 100 Girls' Basketball Player from Northern California and went on to earn All-League Honorable Mention status in 2018, Second Team accolades in 2019, and First Team honors in 2020.
"Lovely will automatically add in-game playing experience to our program," said Wright. I am excited to see her mesh with our style of offense and current roster as she is a three-level scorer with great rebounding instincts. She is a true team player that can fill multiple statistical categories."
The pair round out an already talented signing class of Lauren Cummings and Jada Crawshaw who will don Black and Gold for the 2023-24 season.
