Long Beach State Wraps Up Opening Weekend of Big West Championships

FULLERTON, Calif.—Long Beach State concluded the opening weekend of the Big West Championships as they completed the men's Decathlon and women's Heptathlon on Saturday. All seven of the Long Beach State athletes posted a career best performance in at least one event.

Hailey Fune finished in podium position, as her 5,182 points placed her in third in the women's Heptathlon. Her performance included a season best in the Javelin, with a throw of 30.94m (101-6) and a career best in the 800m with a time of 2:34.12. Fune also finished the Long Jump with a jump of 5.61m (18-5). 
 
Just behind Fune in fourth was Sofia Bailey with 4,951 points. Bailey posted career highs in Javelin with a throw of 31.95m (104-10), and in the 800m with a time of 2:22.88. Her 800m performance was good for a third-place finish in the event. 
 
Long Beach State was also represented by Tayah DeSousa who finished in seventh with 4,716 points. Her Saturday performance was highlighted by a second-place finish in the long jump, where she posted a jump of 5.72m (18-9.25). Allison Bryan also finished her first appearance at the Big West Championships with 4,035 points, where she had personal bests in the Javelin and 800m. 
 
Justice Fair finished fourth in the men's Decathlon with a total of 6,596 points. Fair finished in the top five in four events on Saturday including career best performances in the Pole Vault, clearing the bar at 3.91m (12-10), in Discus with a throw of 36.15m (118-7), in Javelin with a throw of 44.53m (146-1), and in the 1500m Run with a time of 5:30.39. His best finish of the day came in the 110m Hurdles, where he came in third with a time of 14.95. 
 
Milo Orona (6,376 points) and Temi Odugbola (6,229 points) also had strong performances on Saturday to finish the weekend in fifth and sixth place respectively. Orona had career high performances in Pole Vault clearing the bar at 3.91m (12-10) and in the 110m Hurdles finishing with a time of 16.8. Odugbola posted career highs in Javelin and Discus with throws of 45.31m (148-8) and 33.12m (108-8). Both Orona and Odugbola also posted career bests in the 1500m run. 
 
Long Beach State will now prepare for the Big West Championships taking place in Fullerton next weekend.
