Powell, Roberson Qualify for Quarterfinals on Day One of NCAA West Regionals

Caleb Roberson and Kash Powell both move on to the next round of the 800m and 400m Hurdles, respectively, on Friday.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Long Beach State began competition at the NCAA West Regionals on Wednesday with six men's team student-athletes in action throughout the day. Caleb Roberson and Kash Powell headlined the day as both qualified for their respective quarterfinals.
Day One Results
Roberson, in his first NCAA 400m Hurdles race, ran a 51.38 to finish third in heat number three and earn an automatic bid into Friday's quarterfinals. His time was good for 20th overall among the six heats.
Similarly, Powell in the first NCAA meet of his career, finished second in the fifth heat to automatically qualify for the 800m Quarterfinals on Friday. His time of 1:49.77 was 25th overall for the event.
Also in the 800m, Mohammed Mohamed ran in the sixth heat, finishing eighth with a time of 1:50.52 for a 34th place overall finish.
Meanwhile in the sprints, Tristyn Flores was the first to see action this afternoon, competing in the 100m. Finishing sixth in his flight, he ran a time of 10.52 to end up 36th overall on the day. Mekhi Mays raced in the 200m, posting a time of 21.22 to finish eighth in his flight and 36th overall.
The day started with the field events, specifically in the men's Hammer with Sebastian Coleman and Pablo Gamez competing. Gamez recorded a throw of 60.19m (197-5) in his second attempt for a 34th place finish. The mark was tops among fellow Big West performers. Coleman, unfortunately, was called for a foul on each of his three attempts resulting in no mark for the senior. Also in the field was Cyprus Rice in Pole Vault, but also suffered three fouls for no height in the event.
The Beach is back in action tomorrow with members of the Big West Women's Championship winning team set to compete. Rori Denness-Lamont will be the first competitor in Javelin at 1:30 followed by the track events starting at 6 p.m.
