Long Beach State held off a late Matador rally for a 6-4 win the finale.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State got back in the win column on Sunday afternoon with a 6-4 victory over CSUN in the series finale to avoid the sweep.
Kellan Montgomery was phenomenal in his first collegiate start. In what was supposed to be a bullpen game, the right-hander turned in five innings allowing just one unearned run on three hits. He struck out five on the way to earning his second win of the season.
After a scoreless first inning for both sides, the Dirtbags put runs on the board first with a three spot in the bottom of the second. Alex Champagne plated the first with an RBI single through the right side, followed by a two-run single from Jonathon Long for the early 3-0 lead.
They added another run in the fourth on a bases loaded hit by pitch for Ty Borgogno and two more in the seventh on a wild pitch and Long sacrifice fly.
Montgomery, Ponce, and Haley cruised through the first seven innings with CSUN only scoring an unearned run in the fourth. However, CSUN plated three runs in the top of the eighth to make it a two-run ballgame.
Nathen Morris closed out the eighth and went back out for the ninth, retiring the side in order with a pair of strikeouts to secure the 6-4 victory.
After struggling in the first two games of the series, Long bounced back big in the finale, going 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs batted in. Champagne and Tyler White also had multi-hit efforts with two apiece.
Long Beach State will begin an eight-game road stretch next weekend as they head to Hawai'i for their next weekend series.
