Errors Plague Dirtbags Late in Series Opening Loss at Hawai’i

4/22/2023 1:05:00 AM | Baseball

Long Beach State led by two going into the bottom of the seventh.

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Long Beach State played a lot of small ball in Friday's opener, but ultimately the bullpen struggled in a series opening, 6-4, loss at Hawai'i. The Dirtbags led by two heading into the bottom of the seventh but a pair of errors led to a crooked number and the loss.

Both offenses put runs on the board first starting with a sacrifice fly from Connor Burns to plate Jonathon Long in the top half of the first. The Rainbow Warriors responded with a leadoff home run in the bottom half to keep the score even though.

Hawai'i would plate another run in the third to take the lead before Graham Osman really settled in. Looking to bounce back from a rough start his last time out, the southpaw posted a quality start throwing six innings and allowing two earned runs. He surrendered just three hits and a walk while striking out six in the no-decision.

After the Dirtbags tied it in the top of the fifth, they rallied for two more in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. Every run LBSU scored came on either a productive out or a UH error.

Osman was done after six, so Coach Valenzuela went to the bullpen for the seventh. Six of the first seven hitters reached as the 'Bows went on to plate four in the inning and reclaim the lead. Two errors in the frame led to a pair of unearned runs that ultimately made the difference in the 6-4 loss.

Five Dirtbags combined for six hits on the night led by Cole Santander's 2-for-4 effort. Armando Briseno recorded the first extra base hit of his collegiate career with a double and run scored, going 1-for-1 with a walk.

Long Beach State will look to bounce back and even the series tomorrow night. First pitch at Les Murakami Stadium will be at 6:35 p.m. HT (9:35 p.m. PT)
