LBSU Track and Field Concludes Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at the Jack Rose Track

The first of a busy three days at their home track is in the books for Long Beach State.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State track and field wrapped up their first day of competition at the Jack Rose Track for the week, concluding the Pacific Coast Invitational.

With 63 teams on site and over 1,200 athletes in competition, including former Olympic and World Champions, the Beach saw a successful day at home.
 
The duo of Cristian Martinez and Jay Brown had a tremendous showing in the men's 800m race. Martinez ran a time of 1:54.01 for a second-place finish while Brown posted PR of 1:56.06 to finish fifth.
 
On the women's side, Hailey Fune recorded the best placement finishing second in the 100m Hurdles amongst a field of nearly 60 competitors. The junior ran a wind-aided time of 13.68 in her runner-up performance. She was joined by Tayah DeSousa finishing just outside the top ten with a wind-aided time of 14.10 in eleventh.
 
DeSousa also competed in Long Jump, leading a group of six Beach women in the event. With a wind-aided mark of 5.81m (19-0.75), she finished ninth overall in field of 60 jumpers.
 
The men's pole vaulters had a great showing with all four posting new season bests and three of the four recording new personal bests. Leading the charge was Cyprus Rice, finishing eighth overall beating his PR by nearly four inches with a mark of 5.16m (16-11). Nathan Garibay (15-11.25) beat his PR by a full four inches and was matched by teammate Spencer Eley (15-11.25), who beat his PR by just over two inches.

Also in jumps were solid finishes for Novye James and Elijah Harris. James posted a wind-aided mark of 7.20m (23-7.5) for 11th while Harris had a wind-aided mark of 7.12m (23-4.5) to finish 13th.

Out in Azusa, Cameron Gill posted a new lifetime best in the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 9:08.87. It is nearly a 20-second PR improvement and is three-hundredths of a second shy off making the LBSU all-time top ten.

The busy week continues tomorrow with day one of the prestigious Beach Invitational. Competition starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Jack Rose Track.
