3/26/2023 9:24:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
The victory is Long Beach State's first against California since the 2007 season.
HONOLULU, Hawaii—After a hard-fought loss on Thursday, the Long Beach State women's water polo team bounced back in a big way to upset No. 3 California, 8-7 on Sunday. Anne de Kleer led the way for the Beach with three goals and Elisa Portillo netted the overtime winner. The Beach never trailed in the game and the win is their first against California since the 2007 season.
The Beach (14-6, 3-1) started the game as the aggressor, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead behind goals from Rachael Kowalchick and Gabriella Matafora-Adams. However, California would score a goal late in the quarter to cut the lead to one.
The second quarter saw Long Beach State again score two goals, and California score one, making the game 4-2 at halftime. In the third quarter, both teams came out firing which resulted in seven goals between the two teams. The Golden Bears outscored the Beach 4-3 in the quarter, but the Beach maintained a one-goal lead headed into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was a defensive battle between the two teams. California managed to score a goal with less than two minutes left in the game and held the Beach scoreless to force overtime. However, Long Beach State flipped the script and held California scoreless in both overtime periods, as freshman Elisa Portillo found the back of the net to win the game for Long Beach State.
Anne de Kleer led the Beach with three goals, Elisa Portillo had two, and Rachael Kowalchick, Gabriella Matafora-Adams, and Amanda Price each scored one. It was another impressive defensive performance as Chelsea Oliver faced 35 shots in goal.
Long Beach State returns to Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center on Wednesday, March 29 at 1 p.m. as they host Brown.
