3/29/2023 3:10:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
Long Beach State held the Bears to one goal in the second and third quarters combined.
LONG BEACH, Calif.— No. 7 Long Beach State returned home and came away with a 12-9 victory over No. 21 Brown. Trailing after one quarter, the Beach locked in defensively to allow four goals the rest of the game. Gabriella Matafora-Adams and Elisa Portillo led the way for the Beach with three goals each, while Inbar Geva had a strong performance in goal with seven saves.
Looking to build off the momentum of the previous game, the Beach jumped out to an early 2-0 lead behind goals from Martina Cardona and Anne de Kleer. However, Brown would quickly respond with two goals of their own. After a Mariah Walker goal restored the lead for the Beach, Brown would respond again with three goals to give them a 5-3 lead.
Matafora-Adams got the second quarter going for Long Beach State with a quick goal, but Brown would get another goal shortly after. The Beach would turn things up defensively forcing turnovers and difficult shots, and eventually two goals from Elisa Portillo would tie the game at 6-6.
Coming out of halftime, Matafora-Adams set the tone early, scoring two more goals. Amanda Price would also add a goal, as the Beach held Brown scoreless in the third to give them a 9-6 lead.
Brown made a push in the fourth quarter scoring three goals, but three Beach goals from Anne de Kleer, Rachael Kowalchick, and Elisa Portillo were enough to hold off the comeback attempt.
Long Beach State will have a week off, and then return to Big West play as they host UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, April 8 at 7 p.m. The Beach will also honor their graduating seniors for Senior Night. Tickets will be available at longbeachstate.com.
