Long Beach State is back in action on Sunday against California
HONOLULU, Hawaii— The Beach fought hard in a back-and-forth battle with Hawai'i, but ultimately came up short as they fell to the Rainbow Wahine, 9-7 on Thursday.
Long Beach State (13-6, 3-1) started the game on the right foot, as Elisa Portillo found the back of the net to give the Beach an early lead. Hawai'i would surge back to finish the first quarter and start the second quarter on a 5-0 run. However, momentum began to switch back in favor of the Beach as Chelsea Oliver came up with a huge five-meter penalty save. Anne de Kleer and Gabriella Matafora-Adams would both go on to score at the end of the second quarter to keep the game within reach, as Long Beach State headed into halftime down 5-3.
Long Beach State came out strong to begin the second half behind a Rachael Kowalchick goal within the first 30 seconds of play. Hawai'i responded with a goal, and the two teams traded goals the rest of the way as Long Beach State would ultimately fall by two goals.
Offensively for Long Beach State, Gabriella Matafora-Adams and Anne de Kleer both had two goals, while Elisa Portillo, Rachael Kowalchick, and Mariah Walker each scored once. On the defensive side of the game, Chelsea Oliver had another impressive game in goal as she faced 28 shots from Hawai'i and had the five-meter save.
Long Beach State's next game will be on Sunday, at 5 p.m. PST as they face No. 3 California.
