Long Beach State totaled 10 runs on 12 hits to get back in the win column.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – In a very offensive game, Long Beach State prevailed with a 10-6 win over Fresno State on Wednesday night. The victory snaps a three-game Dirtbags losing streak.
After both teams exchanged runs in the first inning, the Long Beach offense kicked it into gear with seven runs in the next two frames.
Nick Marinconz got the second inning started with a leadoff double before of walks would ultimately load the bases. After an Eddie Saldivar sacrifice fly put the Dirtbags in front, Rocco Peppi sent a ball down the left field line for a two-RBI double. Jonathon Long stepped in next and singled singled to right for his second RBI hit in as many innings.
The next big swing came off the bat of Joey Walls Jr. in the third inning. With two runners aboard, he sent a missile to left field for a three-run home run. It is his team-leading fourth of the season and gave the Dirtbags an 8-1 lead.
Unfortunately, the LBSU pitching staff struggled and could not put the Bulldogs away. A four-run fifth brought them back to within three before the teams started exchanging runs. Ultimately, the 'Bags would hang on for a four-run victory scoring double-digits for the fifth time this season.
In the box score, Walls Jr. paced the offense with a 2-for-3 night with a double, home run, two runs scored, and four RBI. Long was with him, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
Peppi, Marinconz, and Kyle Ashworth also posted two-hit nights with Peppi adding two runs scored and two RBI and Ashworth recording three runs on the night.
The Dirtbags will look to carry the momentum into their second weekend of Big West play this weekend. They will head east to UC Riverside for a three-game set with the Highlanders.
