Osman, Santander Lift Dirtbags to Series Opening Win at UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Graham Osman was dominant all night and an early blast from Cole Santander propelled the Dirtbags (12-8, 1-3 Big West) to a series opening victory at UC Riverside (5-12, 0-1 Big West) on Friday night.
Santander came to the plate in the top of the first with Eddie Saldivar on first following his leadoff single and launched a ball over the fence in left-center. It is the second home run of the sophomore's season and put the Dirtbags out front, 2-0, early on.
That turned out to be all the run support Graham Osman would need, turning in another dominant performance on the mound. The junior left-hander shut the Highlanders down for 6.2 innings, scattering five hits and two walks while allowing just one run. He also struck out a new career-high 11 batters on the night.
From one southpaw to another, Osman turned the ball over to Josh Haley in the bottom of the seventh. Haley would throw the final 2.1 innings allowing just one run on three hits.
The Dirtbags put some distance between them and UC Riverside in the seventh plating three runs taking advantage of some bad Highlander defense. Kyle Ashworth would find the left-center gap in the next inning to add two more runs to the Dirtbag lead.
In the box score, Long Beach State only recorded four hits on the night led by Santander's 1-for-1 night with a home run, walk, hit by pitch, and two RBI. Ashworth had the other big swing, going 1-for-3 with a double, walk, and two RBI.
Game two between the Dirtbags and Highlanders will be tomorrow night at the Riverside Sports Complex. First pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
