LONG BEACH, Calif.—The Long Beach State women's water polo team continued their perfect start to Big West play as they took down No. 22 CSUN (15-8, 0-3) on Saturday, 15-7. Eight different players scored for the Beach, led by junior Rachael Kowalchick with five goals. Anne de Kleer also added two goals, making her the 21st 100-goal scorer in program history.
The Beach looked to get things going early, which they did behind a Kowalchick goal in just over a minute of play. A second goal from Kowalchick, and goals from Anne de Kleer and Gabriella Matafora-Adams would extend the lead the 4-1. However, CSUN would score two late goals, including one at the buzzer, to cut Long Beach State's lead to one goal at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was dominated by Long Beach State as they held CSUN scoreless and added five more goals, stretching the lead to 9-3. Kowalchick and Matafora-Adams both completed their hat-tricks, Mariah Walker scored a backhand goal for the second straight game, and Martina Cardona added a five-meter penalty goal.
The Beach set the tone once again in the third quarter, as de Kleer and Kowalchick both scored goals early in the quarter. CSUN would add two goals of their own, but Kowalchick's fifth goal of the day and a late goal from Nadja Novakovic gave the Beach a 13-5 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Long Beach State would go on to stretch the lead to 10 after Jamie Oberman and Elisa Portillo scored to start the fourth quarter, but CSUN would also add two goals of their own, with the game ending 15-7.
Defensively for the Beach, Chelsea Oliver continued her strong season with an 11-save performance, her sixth game this season with double digit saves. Seven different players had steals in the game, with Elisa Portillo leading the team with two. Portillo also led the Beach in assists with five.
MILESTONE FOR DE KLEER
Anne de Kleer's two goals brought her career total to 101, as she became the 21st 100-goal scorer in program history. She is now the fourth player to hit the 100-goal mark in the past two seasons following Orsi Hertzka, Elena Kotanchyan, and Marilia Mimides.
