
WNIT Run For Long Beach State Ends At San Diego

Berry, Harris share scoring lead for Long Beach State with 14 points each.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Long Beach State battled back to trail by just two points at halftime on the road at San Diego, but a career night for Kasey Neubert and a strong night on the glass for USD led the Toreros to a 75-57 victory in the first round of the WNIT.
A quick three from Kianna Hamilton-Fisher gave Long Beach State (23-10) an early lead, but San Diego (18-13) ultimately pulled ahead 20-13 after the first quarter.
A signature defensive stretch helped Long Beach State pull right back into the game in the second quarter. Going on a 10-0 run, Long Beach State took a 25-23 lead on a 3-pointer from Courtney Murphy, and the two teams would be tight into halftime, with USD leading by two points, 31-29.
The Toreros ultimately finished with a 50-22 edge in rebounding and scored 16 second-chance points, an advantage on the glass that would help San Diego pull away through the rest of the contest.
A flagrant foul against Tori Harris helped Long Beach State cut the lead to three at 43-40, but with the Big West Player of the Year out of the game for the rest of the quarter, San Diego went on a 6-0 run to close out the third and take a 49-40 lead.
With the momentum in their favor, the Toreros would continue to extend their lead in the fourth as Neubert finished off a career night. The USD senior finished with 18 points and a career-high 19 rebounds to help seal the win for the Toreros.
After the defeat, an outstanding season for Long Beach State comes to an end. Long Beach State finishes the season with a 23-10 overall record and making the program's Head Coach Jeff Cammon was named the Big West Coach of the Year, and LBSU took home additional major awards as senior Tori Harris was picked as the Big West Player of the Year while Krystina Jeskeova was named the Big West Defensive Player of the Year. Five players in total received All-Big West honors, with Ma'Qhi Berry, Malia Bambrick and Kianna Hamilton-Fisher accompanied the duo in postseason awards.
