Long Beach State will look to bounce back against CSUN on Saturday.
LONG BEACH, Calif.— The Long Beach State women's water polo team fell just short of a comeback as the Beach fell to No. 13 Princeton, 11-8, Monday night at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
Freshman Elisa Portillo had a career-high six goals, and the Beach outshot the Tigers 35-16, but a 17-save performance from the Princeton goalkeeper was enough to stymie Long Beach State.
Princeton jumped out to an early 4-1 lead after the first quarter, with Elisa Portillo scoring a five-meter penalty with a minute left in the quarter.
The second quarter again saw Princeton come out firing, as they would add four more goals to their total. Portillo scored another goal at the buzzer, but the Beach found themselves down 8-2 at halftime.
The Beach looked to flip the script in the second half as they would go on to score first through Portillo. A Mariah Walker backhand also beat the goalkeeper, but Princeton would also score twice, with the quarter ending 10-4 in favor of the Tigers.
The Beach came out aggressive in the fourth quarter to cut into the lead. Three goals by Portillo and one from Martina Cardona saw Long Beach State cut the deficit to two, but a late Princeton goal sealed the victory for the Tigers.
On the defensive side of the game, seven different Beach players recorded steals, as they racked up a total of 14. Elisa Portillo led the Beach with five steals, and Martina Cardona had three. In goal, Inbar Geva had two saves.
Long Beach State will look to bounce back this Saturday as they host CSUN at noon. Live stats for the game will be available at theFOSH.net, and streaming will be available on ESPN+.
