Long Beach State advances to fifth-place game on Sunday
LA JOLLA, Calif.—Long Beach State played two hard fought contests on Saturday, dropping their first to UC Irvine and winning against Indiana.
The first game of the day was a physical matchup where No. 9 UC Irvine came out on top by a score of 8-7. It was a back-and-forth game and UC Irvine's largest lead of the game was 8-5 after three quarters. Long Beach State held the Anteaters scoreless in the fourth quarter, but came up just short, dropping the contest by one goal. Rachael Kowalchick led the way for the Beach with four goals, and Martina Cardona, Anne de Kleer, and Elisa Portillo also found the back of the cage.
The second game was another tough battle against No. 13 Indiana. The two teams traded goals for the first three quarters which resulted in four different lead changes. However, the Beach pulled away with a strong fourth quarter, once again holding their opponent scoreless. Martina Cardona's first quarter hat-trick got the Beach started, and two goals each from Lara Luka and Elisa Portillo in the fourth quarter helped solidify the win. Six players scored in the game, each of them with two or more goals.
Long Beach State will now advance to play in the fifth-place game at the Triton Invite. They will face No. 8 Fresno State on Sunday at 10:50 a.m.
